About Moss Rock Preserve (a.k.a. Shades Crest Boulderfields):
|
Recently the land directly around the boulders has been secured as public land and dedicated as a 250 acre natural preserve. There are several classic lines, and many very hard problems here. It is primarily an afternoon destination for Birmingham locals, but a worthwhile stop if you are passing through. Thanks to Drtopo.com, Lee Means, and Lee Payne for the info. I have just added names/grades for now, but I'm planning a trip out here soon so I will add a lot of beta in the near future, if anyone has any please add it. |

| Directions: | From I-459, take the Hwy 150 exit. Go south on 150 (coming from the east, this is a left; from the west, merge right). Pass two gas stations on the left and take a left at the second stoplight. Go past the Publix plaza and follow this road (Sulphur Springs Road) up the hill for about 1 mile, past Al Seier road, and look for a right turn into The Preserve subdivision (Preserve Parkway). It is marked by a small cluster of stones and a sign, but they can be hard to spot. About 2 miles down that road you will pass through a roundabout with parking on the other side, right at the trailhead. Follow the trail 5 minutes to the boulders. Recently the trail has been getting confusing due to clearcutting for a new roadway, but the boulders will be 45 degrees to your left when facing the woods from the parking lot. |
