About Eklutna Canyon ICE:

Eklutna Canyon is probably the most popular ice climbing area near Anchorage. Almost every year there are high quality routes in excellent condition. It is also easy to access, even when the river is not quite frozen, as it is shallow in most places and can easily be waded. It can get crowded on weekends here, though, but it is much quieter than the Seward Highway ice climbs and is usually sheltered from the wind. The ice here is usually climbable from late October into late April.
Nearest town or city: Chugiak
Directions: Thirty minutes north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway, take the Thunderbird Falls exit and park in the Falls parking lot. Gain access to Eklutna River by the steep and icy dirt bank directly off the parking lot and follow the well booted trail. If the river is not frozen yet, head up the Thunderbird Falls trail until you can scramble down to Eklutna River, paying heed to the canyon walls. Familiarity with the canyon is a must if approaching your routes from above.
