Top Rope by looping rope over the top of the pipe. The pipe is very slick and does not provide much friction so wrapping a second loop over the pipe is advisable.
This climb ascends the 90 degree west facing aspect of the Realm of Refuse pillar, directly under the belay pipe. On years when prevailing winds come from the west-northwest this has some of the most solid ice on the pillar. Leeward years have more ice cycles and weaker ice. One must also be careful on this climb as the stainless steel I-beams that support the pipe are sometimes hidden under thin ice and can easily dull ice tools. Realm of Refuse ice is always very brittle due to arctic climate.
By belay. Down climb. Balance on pipe for 30ft traverse to tundra... quite tricky.
