About Caribou Creek ICE:
| Located in the interior of Southcentral Alaska in the Talkeetna Mountains, Caribou Creek is a playground of moderate ice climbs that are easily accessible from the road. The area is only about two hours north of Anchorage, and can be reached by a short approach on skis, snowshoes or snowmachines. The creek has formed a canyon from 200 to 400 feet deep, and there are at least 25 routes in a three mile stretch of the canyon. Be careful though, the winds have been known to blast down the canyon, and the average daytime high during winter in the area is a balmy -10 degrees (yes, that is a minus sign). |

| Directions: | Head north on the Glenn Highway from Anchorage, and turn towards Palmer (stay on the Glenn). Follow the Glenn Highway until you pass the Matanuska Glacier Overlook. Caribou Creek will be about five miles further up the road, but lodging is available near the glacier overlook if you desire due to the cold. Park off of the highway and make your way up the canyon to the north until you see line after line of ice flowing down the side walls. There are also a couple of routes in the streambed for some nice ice bouldering. |
