About Portage Valley ICE:
| An hour south of Anchorage, the Portage Valley puts you in spectacular glaciated mountain scenery. Look for ice along the 5-mile long Portage Road, and enjoy the straightforward approaches. The routes in this area are sometimes slow to form up, so it is not a good early season choice. Portage Valley is known for incredible amounts of snow and wind that bury the climbs and cause extreme avalanche conditions. Most routes in or near avalanche zones are climbed early in the season. |

| Directions: | Drive south from Anchorage on the Seward Highway past Girdwood to the Portage Road leading to the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center for Portage Glacier. Turn on this road and watch for the ice near the mileage indicated in the section descriptions. |
