From the town square, keep heading west on Gurly St. which becomes Thumb Butte Rd. to its end at the Butte parking area. ($2 except free on Wed.) Approach is via a paved loop trail with its apex at the saddle beneath the south end of the crag. Once at the saddle look for faint use trails heading to either side around its circumference. Be prepared for some significant bushwhacking and scrambling to get to some of the established routes. Look out for possible Peregrine closure Feb. to July 15.
