About Big Lake Look Out:

A dirty face of about 50 yrds in length w/ a dozen or so bolted routes. Bolt placement seems awkward and frequent, anchors consist mostly of chains w/ load beaners left in place. Starts are often tricky, chaucey and lichen covered w/ limited protection. Surrounded by Aspen, Pine and boulders. In the shade all day w/ exception of possible early morning sun. Most climbs seem very stout. Very limited coverage/knowledge of site, said to have 5.8 to 5.12, but all the bolted routes seem like 11 on up to me.
Nearest town or city: Alpine
Directions: From Alpine, head North on Hghwy191 and take FR 249 (dirt road) toward Big Lake. About 26 miles in, take the turn to Big Lake LO (Look Out Tower). There are 2 or 3 splits in the road, just follow the brown/red dirt road and keep traveling up. Park at the Look Out Tower and follow the foot path that start next to the parking area. The trail splits w/ the route on the left going along the top, sloped back of the rock face. Take the obscure trail to the right downward to the bottom of the sheer side of the rock. 3 bolt rap anchors can be accessed sporadically at the top of the formation.
