About Emeralds, The:

Sport climbing area with a lot of steep walls. Metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rock that makes it similar to sandstone. Camping is free along the river with restrictions on open campfires.

The position of these climbs are in proximity to the Yuba River where it flows out of Spaulding Lake. Sometimes the gates are opened without warning so be prepared to move to higher ground at the FIRST sign of rising water. Climbing season is generally May to November with very hot temperatures in late July and August.

Nearest town or city: Emigrant Gap
Directions:

From I-80, exit onto Hwy. 20 and drive four miles toward Nevada City. Turn north onto Bowman Lake Rd. and drive for 1.4 miles. Just before the bridge that crosses the Yuba River, turn right on the dirt access road(this road is sometimes gated so you might have to walk in). Stay on this dirt road for about 0.6 mile, passing through a quarry and some trees. You will reach some boulders on your right and Steel Monkey Wall is behind these boulders. The Benches crags are above Steel Monkey Wall and The Gorge is at the end of the dirt entry road.
