About Conejo Mountain:

Mystery Science Theater is good beginner place, or somewhere to get back into shape. Short sport routes (all MST routes are TR'able) grades vary from 5.6 low angle crap to 5.11d overhangs. Watch out for the power lines, apperantly someone has died fooling around with them (DUH!) Rock quality is generally good, but holds do break off, so have an attentive belay! There Outcast has a higher quality of rock and is 20-30 min farther on the fireroad. There are also a few (2, I think) bolted routes on the faces that overlook the freeway but the approaches and cliffs themselves have always been lined with poison oak, the faces look really fun, but the itch factor has always kept us away, maybe some adventurous soul can have fun there. NOTE: there are access issues affecting this crag. In order to gain access to the cliff, one must jump a Southern California Edison fence or tresspass through private property (the trailer park). Some local residents welcome passerbys while others detest them. Please proceed with discretion.
Nearest town or city: Newbury Park
Directions: From U.S. Highway 101 in Newbury Park, take the Wendy Drive exit and go west. Turn immediately on Old Conejo Road (which parallels the freeway) at the Mobil Station and head toward the summit. After about 1 mile park in the Pepper Tree Playfield (there is no legal street parking). Walk up the street to the trailer park. Go throught the entrance, then turn right at the first street, La Lomita. You will see a sign at the base of the hill stating "Caution: rattlesnakes and mountain lions." Find the best way to proceed up the hill for 100 meters or so, until you gain the fire road. Go left on the fire road and the first climbs will be on your right in a couple of minutes. From your car this takes about 15-20 minutes. For the Outcast turn left at the fire road and proceed up the road for another 25-30 minutes. The routes are on the back side of a large boulder that sits directly under a powerline tower.
