About Gym, The:

The Gym area is said to be the best place to climb in the Lower Kern Canyon. The Granite rock is solid and clean. It has about 9 bolted routes and another 7 trad routes. Some bolted routes can use gear placement in section that have cracks. Nearly all of the routes have bolted belay anchors on top. The climbs range from 35 to 80 feet and levels from 5.4 to 5.12 although most are in the 5.10-5.11 range. What also adds to the quality of this area is the approach. It sits on the edge of the Kern River but on the opposite side of the HWY 178 making it accessible only during a low river flow. A raft is helpful when the flow is too high to wade across. Use good judgment when crossing this river. Distance is 10.5 miles east from the entrance of the canyon.
Approach: Driving in from Bakersfield there is a dirt turnout on the left (North) 10.5 miles past the canyon entrance. The Gym climbing area is directly across the turnout on the other side of the river from the HWY 178. Find an easy way down to and across the water.
