About Tenney Crags:
| These are the large formations that are to the North of North Cheyenne canyon and are visible from Colorado Springs. (The National Geographic Topo map of the area identifies them at the Tenney Crags. However, different maps give different names to the rocks in this area. The most accepted names are Sentinel Rock for this rock, Specimen Rock for the rock to the south, and Tenney Crags for the higher outcrop with a summit at 10,093 feet.) I (spiderwort) first climbed the north ridge of Sentinel in 1953. So, I can say that its history goes back quite a while. A lot of Sentinel's granite is pretty crumbly |

| Directions: | High Drive to the start of the Palmer Trail (Palmer Red Rock Loop). Start up the Palmer Trail. At the first switchback (where the Palmer Trail first starts to climb out of the canyon), continue a short distance up the canyon to the chimney of what used to be the Camp Vessey Cabin. From there go south to the ridge crest and follow the ridge to the base of Sentinel. There's a faint trail up this ridge made by rock collectors. The start of the approach is in Bear Creek Canyon Park (City of Colorado Springs). Camping in the park is prohibited. Camping is permitted in adjacent National Forest. But, you need to pack in to any place you can camp. And, you need a good map to know who's land you're on. |
