About Poudre - 420 Boulders:

The 420's are granite boulders nestled in the pines in the beautiful Poudre Canyon. This area that has seen a fair amount of press in the last year due to visits by some of our heros. No guides exist to the area - word of mouth seems to be the method here. There are only a handful of moderates falling in the V0-V3 range with most of the lines being a little or a lot harder. The Bog is another good area reached via a river crossing a bit downcanyon from the 420's. The Pullout and Hatchery Rocks are a bit more downcanyon and are a little less extensive than the other areas. See 'Upper Poudre Canyon' for further descriptions. The best seasons here are Fall and Spring, yet it is possible to climb here year round. Summer can be too hot and you'll be greasing off, while in winter, well it is Colorado in the mountains.

| Directions: | Drive N on 287 out of Fort Collins and turn left on Hwy 14 at Ted's Place. For the 420's continue up the Poudre canyon about 40 miles to just past Roaring Creek trailhead (this is about 16 miles past Pingree Park Road). About 1/2 mile on the right from Roaring Creek Trailhead (RCT) you will see a open gate on the right with a 'Day Use Only' sign.
Park at nearby pullouts and walk about ten minutes down the jeep trail to the
boulders. The first boulder is Hank's boulder and stands alone by a pine tree. The trail continues over a stream to the main 420 boulders. Tilt and other problems are another 10 minutes further on faint trails. If you see cabins (or the large Kingpin boulder) stay away from this private land and head further uphill. There are plenty of state forest campgrounds up and down the Poudre, Big Bend being closest to most of the bouldering action. Also a lot of fishing, hiking, biking and backcountry skiing nearby. |
