Travels with Charlie had always gone straight up over the boulder from the belay ledge until one day when Peter Jameson and I were warming up for some serious climbing and I said, "wonder what would happen if we went out this ledge and tried to scoot around?" Well, Dolph Kuss and one of his kids happened to be up at East Animas doing some hiking and climbing when he saw us from over by the Watch Crystal. Supposedly, He called to his kid and said, "You want to see somebody fall?" I think some of you might know who he called over. :-)
We had no idea if it would go or not and I backed off the lead after just about lowering myself down to the point where it would be really tough to pull back up and the pro looked more than just a little "sketchy." That was a big mistake because Peter Jameson went out there and after four or five "Man, I don't know, How do I get back if it won't go?" conversations he went ahead and did it. That was when I realized I had to follow it and after taking all the pro out had no idea if he had put anything in on the other side of the traverse. Should have just led the sucker.
By the way, we always called the finish across the traverse "Charlie's Indirect"
