Description:

CR 14 North of Ouray to Mine Tour parking area. Up road, past metal gate and 2 switchbacks to obvious gully thrash. 300 ft or so up gully to 1st ice step. Ask locals for way around this, or solo 25 ft step and walk to slung tree. More bent over climbing/walking to start of 60ft wide flow, with screw or v-thread belay. Main line is on right side and approx WI3. Harder lines to the left. This is first pitch in Roberts guide to "ride-the-tree' belay. His 2nd pitch is ice mogules to 20 ft vertical section to tree belay (60-70 meters). If belay at start of 1st ice step, can be a 4 pitch climb of about 800 ft.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Climb

Good route, some rambling at the bottom and a little wet in the afternoon but that's what we get for getting there at 2 pm. Use the v-threads in the ice, not the trees to rap.

3 out of 5 stars 1 good pitch with lots of gully thrashing

I don't know if I like this route, but is an escape from the crowds. Roberts guide has this as 2 pitches, but unless you know the way around the first ice step can be 4. For Roberts' 1st pitch main line is about WI3, less traveled and more fun lines roughly WI4 and up to the left of this, see pic below.
