There are several high quality ice climbing routes that form every year. However, conditions can be variable, depending on temperatures and precipitation. Get condition information prior to making a long trip. Some routes do not form consistantly.
The canyon is a beautiful setting and there is typically a lot less traffic than other ice climbing areas in the state. Local accomodations in Rifle are fairly inexpensive. Overall, when the conditions are good, Rifle offers some of the best and easily accessible naturally forming ice in Colorado.
