About The Roost:

This is a relatively new bouldering area just up the road from Jackson falls. Found by climbers over the 2005-06 season, the amount of development here has been impressive. That said, the potential for new problems & futher development is really what characterizes this area. At this point, much of the rock just needs a good cleaning & some traffic to shape up into some of Southern Illinois finest bouldering. Unfortunately, there is a fair amount of choss in the area, & this can't be helped. But the amount & quality of good climbing can't be denied, & classics like The Oriole, Harvest Swing, The Gobbler, & Screaming Eagle are more than worth the visit. The area boasts So Ill's biggest sloper & beautiful lakeside climbing in the Shawnee National Forest. So go get out there & enjoy!

Directions: From the Pines campground follow the road a short while past a sharp left turn. On the right will be a small pull-off & an ATV trail. Follow this main trail for about 10 minutes until you come to a dry creek bed & a small rock cairn. Turn Left here & follow the faint trail alongside the creek bed. Shortly you will see the lake ahead & the first area to your right, Spirit Cave. See the guidebook for more extensive directions...
