About St. Cloud State University:

Opened January of 2005 in the new recreational center and called, "The Mountain Dew Xtreme Climbing Wall." This indoor gym features multiple surfaces. The wall is 28' tall. It is maintained by Outdoor Endeavors and is sponsored by Pepsi.

Mock Rock: A plastic panel construction with unconnected "crack" features in which a hand jam of any sort is few and far between. There are small natural holds on this mock rock which make for challenging boulder problems and solid foot holds. Besides the cracks the mock rock offers a overhang and a stemming portion.

Plywood: The rest of the wall is contrusted of plywood with a painted/textured surface. There is a large overhung wall whose top is 12' out from the bottom. A chimney and 6-7' roof.

Top Roping: There is a variety of routes for all skills levels. Not much offered for lead climbing.

Bouldering: Plenty of crash pads. All the bouldering is on vertical wall (99.9%). This does limit the difficulty and variety of problems.

Other: The wall is generally reset only once a year, for the annual Competition in Feb. Routes and Problems are occasionally added here and there (with difficult routes and problems being unmarked as the lack of dedicated climbers at this gym).

Hours: Top Rope- (Sun-Wed: 6-9pm, Thrus closed for climbing clinics, Sat: 1-4pm). Bouldering-Whenever the building is open

Classes: Belay Classes and Lead Climbing Class. Belay Classes cost $10 and are on every other week. Lead Climbing Class is $20. Must be able to climb a selected 5.9 route.

Cost: Free to students. $2 to rent basic 5.10 shoes. Free Harness rental (head wall or sport harness). Flat General (public) rate: $6.00 per person.

Overall Opinion: Not a place you want to come out of your way to climb. Come for the annual competition or if your in the area. SCSU also has the quarries and highway 23 boulder located 15 minutes away from campus with OK sport lead and a couple of hard problems.
