About Elephant Rocks State Park:

Bouldering

Elephant Rocks is a State Park named for the granite boulders that, obviously, dot the land. The texture is similar to that of Joshua Tree: abrasive and great for friction. The best time to visit is in the cooler seasons of Spring and Fall; many of the problems require smearin', slappin' and pullin' on the texture.

Roped climbing is prohibited,; bouldering is tolerated so far, so be considerate and polite. The authors of the only guide published so far (Dr. Topo) recommend not visiting on the weekends, since parking is already limited and the park is usually crowded. The idea is to limit the impact, visible and otherwise. Please also refer to On Line Climbing.com for information.

The Dr Topo guide will give ratings and specific directions to problems. Most problems are fairly moderate, on the V scale, though there are some that start getting up into the higher numbers, if numbers mean something to you.

Elephant Rocks is a day-use park, with no camping. Johnson Shut-Ins is nearby for camping, though can be incredibly crowded on weekends during the warm months. Washington State Park is about 35-45 minutes north on Hwy 21, where you can find camping and amenities, too. Other private (fee) camping venues should also be available nearby.

Nearest town or city: Ironton
Directions: The Park is on Hwy 21, so from any direction, find Hwy 21 in the southest of Missouri, and locate the Park. Getting to Hwy 21 from an interstate should not be difficult, nor should navigating the smaller roads of Missouri to get to Hwy 21.

From St. Louis: take Hwy 21 south (southwest). After the little town of Belleview, the Park will be on your left.
