Description:

From the top of Solar Slab, it is possibly to gain the summit of Rainbow Mountain with several hundred feet of scrambling and about 80' of technical terrain. From the summit, head due north toward the towers that guard the summit. As you approach them, you will see a small tunnel/arch of rock (this is described in the Black Orpheus descent on ST)- pass through this tunnel and directly across from it is an obvious chimney system leading upward. Belay on a nice ledge about 20' up the chimney. Pitch 1: Climb the inobvious and tricky ramp- pro is intricate. 5.9, 30' Pitch 2: Fourth class up and right to a nice tree just right of an obvious corner/ramp system. 60' Pitch 3: Start on the right side of the ledge below a wide crack- ascend this and head right along a decent ledge system for a full rope length, eventually cutting left to belay on a ledge. 5.5, 200' Pitch 4: Just above and left of the ledge is a short offwidth crack. Climb this to a giant tree. 5.6, 20' From here, 3rd class toward the summit above. From the summit, head south and then west, working along ledges and gully systems until you gain the upper western plateau. From here, heading due west will take you to the back of the canyon. Once there, follow the trail back to the mouth of the canyon.

Combined this route with Jolly Roger for an all-out adventure involving 6 hours of rapells in the dark, forest rangers, a volunteer climber rescue party and a chopper on 'stand-by'.
