Description:

This is the route that ascends the awesome crack system that splits the varnished wall left of Birdland. Amazingly, while it is not insanely hard, it is definitely old school at the grade- and put up by the legendary Joe Herbst. Climb the first two pitches of Birdland and then traverse right (5.3-ish) for about 50' to the base of the main crack. Alternatively, you can climb the first pitch of Rawlpindi, but instead of bearing left on the second pitch, you can continue straight up to the base of the crack. Pitch 4: Ascend the crack that splits the face to a bolted station at its top. From here, one double rope rappel returns you to the top of Pitch 2 of Birdland. Alternatively, you can continue up a few more pitches to the top of the feature.

Descent Options:

Rappel.

4 out of 5 stars via Rawalpindi

We did this route in 3 p's starting on Rawalpindi, which, besides being a very enjoyable start, avoided the throng on Birdland. Thin face holds to the left of the crux finger crack are good. I have been eyeing this route for awhile from Birdland and am glad that I finally got to do it. Steep fun with great protection.
