Description: The South Face of Mescalito is largely undeveloped except for the low angle, blocky buttress that guards the entrance. This is Cat in the Hat, one of the all-time classics of the area. Even though it only clocks in at 5.6, the climbing is classic and, depending on your abilities, you can add a variation to the start from the East Face up to about 5.10.
Approach:Home of Cat in the Hat, the south face of Mescalito is accessed via a small system of trails heading up the canyon. Be careful with trail finding. The good news is that almost all of the trails near the base of Mescalito eventually lead to Cat in the Hat. Follow the trails generally south and west until you are even with the south face of Mescalito. Here, a nice trail should appear heading up and left. This will take you to the base of Cat. The approach is about 30-40 minutes from the parking lot.
