Description:

Diablo Diamante – South East Passage – Climbs the tower situated on the valley floor in the “Main Area” of Christmas Tree Pass. The route climbs the south east corner of the formation. 3 pitches plus one short 4th class section. FA: Unknown. We replaced or beefed up anchor stations on our ascent and added a summit register. Judging by the condition of the anchors & bolts we may have done the second ascent. Pitch 1 5.9 – Start high on the apron. There is a single bolt for the belayer. Climb a left leaning water drainage flue with a continuous crack ending on a ledge with a chain anchor. Pitch 2 5.8 – walk right then climb the low angle open book with 1 bolt. Stemming with fantastic friction! 1-#3 Cam, 1 bolt, chain and webbing anchor. Pitch 3 4th class – traverse right to the alcove / saddle beneath the summit and belay for the 4th pitch from there. Pitch 4 5.9R - Climbs the OW crack to the summit. 1-#1, 1- #3, 2-#4, 1-#4.5 cams. Finishes with a spooky step across to the main summit! There is a 2 bolt anchor with chains and an old piece of webbing threaded thru a hole in the rock. I would recommend that the next party up this tower replace the webbing with a new 5’ piece. The route can be done in one afternoon. Carefully rap the route. There are many opportunities for your rope to get hung up. The route can be done with 1 rope but a second rope would be worth its weight. This formation was originally known as Frock Rock

4 out of 5 stars Second Time

The second time we climbed the route. Brought a additional 4.5 cam for the last pitch. One of the easiest tower routes I've done and one of the most fun! Very cool summit!
