About Box Canyon:
| This is a pretty decent climbing area about 1 hour south of Albuquerque, just west of Socorro. Sporting excellent bouldering, a good selection of sport routes, and even a few trad lines, there is plenty to keep everyone busy. The rock is rhyolite, though people often mistake it for basalt. In some areas the rock is quite smooth, in others it is sharp and pocketed. The rock is well featured, though some tends to be a bit on the flakey side. As a result a few of the harder sport routes have been forced into existence with disgusting glue reinforced holds, although the best routes are natural. This is really the best winter crag for a day trip from Albuquerque. Some bolted routes require gear in places. |

| Directions: | From Socorro, head west out of town for a few miles on US 60 (like you are going to Datil). You evenetually pass an obvious canyon on your left. Just past the canyon, take a dirt road to the left which leads to a large parking area with a porta-john. The Streambed walls, Waterfall Wall, Fillet a Papillon, the Red Wall, and North Wall are all accessed from this parking area. Continue along the road for the other areas, including Minor Wall, Major Wall, Alcohol Wall and the Unbeatable Boulder. |
