About Ship Rock:

Located on the flanks of Grandfather Mountain - once thought to be the highest mountain in North America. Didn't really get developed until the '80s when the Blue Ridge Parkway was being completed.

Camping can be found at the Julian Price park on the parkway or farther south to the Linville Area.
Nearest town or city: Boone
Directions: From Boone take the Parkway south to the Rough Ridge parking area. Park here and walk south along the parkway, across a bridge then follow the trail up alongside the rock. If this parking area is full continue south on the Parkway to the next parking then walk to the rock from there. DO NOT park on the grass along the parkway. Also do not hike along the Rough Ridge trail to access the rock; the only legal approach is from below. Environmental issues have been a problem in this area so do not contribute to the problem that may close Ship!!
