Description:

The "south side" route up Mt. Hood, the easiest way up a splendid peak. Start early (midnight?) to avoid crowds. Park at Timberline, follow an obvious climber's trail to the right of the ski area. At 10,000 you get above the lifts, follow an obvious blunt ridgeline up, watch your step above the 'schrund. Full beta in kearney's guidebook as well as the one in the Mountaineers edition of Northwest classics.

Descent Options:

Get down early, the pearly gates get crowded and choss fall down.

3 out of 5 stars Don't turn your back on Hood...

Being only about 50 miles from the Pacific Ocean, when the jet stream dips out of Alaska, it picks up all that moisture dumping many feet of snow in a very short time. The heavy snows and horrible wind (mph 80 sustained) during my January 2005 attempt made Hood a little less than "Baggable". Two days of miserably cold whiteout conditions caught my attention and made me realize that nothing is a "given", not even Mt.Hood.
