About Pilot Rock:

Pilot Rock is a shallow intrusive rhyolitic volcano plug that sits on top of the siskiyou. It's formation of columns tilt 20 to 30 degrees to the northeast from the uplift forces that shape the Siskiyou. Loose columns and loose rock on top have limited most of the route development on only a small area on the south side and two earlier routes on the southwest side. A well-worn trail leads from the PCT to pilots' west gully route. With Mount shasta rising to the south and Mount McLoughlin to the north, both the columnar formations and view from the top of Pilot Rock are spectacular. Note: Climbing columns has inhernt risks. Columns should be evaluated each season for stability as columns that are stable one season, may not be stable the following season.
