About Devils Racetrack:

Devil's Racetrack

This is a very visible, but rarely climbed area north of Knoxville on I-75. Information on this area is not published anywhere to the best of my knowledge, but i'm getting a bunch of stuff together to post here.

This is an Awesome Online Guidebook for Devils Racetrack!!

There are no access issues to this area that I am aware of, but a problem that needs to be noted is that occationally cars are broken into in the roadside parking area. If you park here, be sure to take all of the valuables out of your car. ***DON'T IGNORE THIS***

Nearest town or city: Knoxville
Directions: From Knoxville take I-75 North. Exit at TN 25W. This is the Stanton Dancyville exit. Go West on TN 25 for less than a mile, then turn LEFT into Cove Lake State Park main entrance. This is the road next to the Ranger's office. Continue down this road for a short distance, then make a LEFT onto Loop Rd. Pass Ward, and Jackson roads, then go straight through the STOP sign at Butter and Eggs Rd. After about a quarter of a mile, you will see a New house with a RED TIN ROOF. Turn left down the gravel road directly BEFORE this house. After less than a minute, you will see a gravel road on the right blocked off with big boulders. Park here, and hike up the gravel road parallel to the creek for several minutes until you see a easy place to cross the creek to your right. Once you cross the creek follow the paths upto the nose of the main spire. Everything to the left of the nose is the north face, everything to the right is the Alley.

Alternate Directions

Some of you may find this a little easier. From Knoxville take I-75 North untill you see the Jacksboro, Lafollette exit. Take the exit and take left, This will take you over the interstate. You will see a shoneys, about 1000yds past shoneys there is a underpass on your right, take it. Follow the road to the 4way Stop turn left. Follow the road untill you see the red tin roof, turn right before onto a gravel drive. follow the road till you see the boulder. This is where you will park. Finding the the creek crossing is pretty tricky in the summer. Hopefully it will be marked with something in the future.

Access Issues: Before you get to the entry point, aka the boulder, it would be wise to park near a house at the bottom of the hill, or even somewhere along the eggs street, people are relatively friendly. I do not suggest parking at the cumberland trail lot because it is around an hour or more depending on the amount of gear you bring to the bottom of the access point at the boulder. Once you get to the boulder, walk up the stream along the side, there is a trail, if you run out of trail, keep going until your directly below the rock face, and then make your way up. Do not, i repeat do not try to hike up and across! There are tons of downed trees, loose rocks, and thorns galore! Finally, Bring water and be safe! Its a rigourous hike up the slope.
