About San Rafael Swell:
| The San Rafael Swell has an interesting history as a part of Utahs natural areas. Originally slated for national park status, but was passed over in favor of Arches and Natural Bridges. Today the Swell is managed by the BLM and has a multi-use agenda. Ranchers, mining and recreational ORV users all lay claim to the vast beauty of the Swell. The Swell is home to some of the most remarkable rock art yet seen. One of the best and most accessible panels is located along the buckhorn wash, a few miles N. of the San Rafael river. These are not petroglyphs as can be seen at Newspaper rock or Wall Street at Indian creek and Moab. The figures are Ghostlike with large headresses and what, to some, looks like blood dripping from thier hands and weapons. Very interesting and defenitely worth a look! |

| Directions: | The Swell is located roughly between Price (to the north) and Green River (to the south). From Salt Lake, travel south to Price on hwy 6/191 then exit to Castledale and follow signs to the Swell. From the south take hwy 70 to exit 129 (Cottonwood Wash) follow this along the highway until you can turn north and drop down into the wash. its about 20 miles to the heart of the Swell |
