Description:

In Feb 2006 this climb formed up a full 10 pitches for the first time ever. On my 3rd time to the top, I was able to climb the pillar on P7, for ice leads on every pitch of this mega-classic. If 7 is not in, and you don't feel like climbing M-Hard, there is a short 5.5 chimney 200 yards east on the ledge, providing access to the base of P8. Descent involves walkoff East to the restaurant, then 60M rap from the handrail, then 20M rap from a dead stump through the chimney. Walk around to the top of 6 and rap the route. With 60M ropes, it is BARELY possible to rap to the bottom of P5 from here, with rope stretch.

4 out of 5 stars Stairway to Heaven

With Zach and Jason. Three days, three WI 5 routes and 1 mixed. Unimpressed with the amount of ice and snow formed in this canyon for January. But the area got a dump as we left. Surprised how low (elevation) it sits. Many routes not in. Good stuff though for a boy so far away from his local ice stomping grounds. Better than Joe's Valley last December anyhow. Definitely got to time the ice right in Utah. Global warming?
