About 2nd Mountain- Old Trail Routes:

The Old Trail boulders/routes were discovered and developed back when access to Second Mountain was gained by parking near the turn-off, then hiking up an old hunter's access trail just E of Second Mtn. Road.

Well, those days are gone, since some bubba decided to rip out all the trees and drag (you guessed it) a trailer up into the resultant erosion field. However, the land surrounding the borders of his hillybilly hovel are still Public, as are the boulders.

Nearest town or city:
Directions: Follow Rte 33 west from Harrisonburg, passing through Rawley Springs (McDornan's Store) and passing Rte 847, the turn-off to the Rawley Aretes/Gum Run, etc. You can still reach the old trail by parking just past Second Mountain Road (limit groups to two cars MAX), then hiking back East along 33 until you are in sight of the trailer and clearing. You will see a large boulder at the edge of the forest, here. Cut into the woods and trend right, first reaching then following the banks of the obvious ravine to eventually contour right, around some short boulders, to reach the trail. The Rook and the Stigmata wall are about fifteen minutes' hike up the trail. Obviously, keep your head down, be invisible until you are in the woods, and if anyone tells you to leave, just do it.... you can fight for your rights when there's a ranger there, later. Camping is available about two miles further down the road, where the GWNF spreads out on all sides. Good clearance is recommended if you are going to follow any of the dirt roads off pavement, but careful navigation and some selective scouting can snag you a spot with a private swimming hole.
