Topo for the north end of the crag: http://www.cstone.net/users/gmike/or.LRTSNorth.pdf Good concentration of moderate slab and crack routes, along with excellent eastern exposure, make for very pleasant climbing during the winter/spring; conversely, it's very hot during most summer days. Bring 60m ropes, and be gentle on the flora on the climber's trail and on the crag.... |
| Approach: | This area, along with the Mixed Messages Crag, is the only climbing on Old Rag best approached from the Weakley Hollow (north-side) Trailhead - the one most popular with hikers as it is the closest to NoVa/MD/DC. Get here early to be able to park at the upper lot or be ready for an extra 2/3 mi. of hiking. Hike up the Ridge Trail until it hits the crest of the N. Ridge of the mountain, atop the first significant section of exposed granite: you are now standing atop the Lower Ridge Trail Slab. Consult the topos for further directions. |
