About Exfoliation Dome:

Exfoliation Dome is most striking feature in the Clear Creek drainage, where most of the Darrington climbs are located (it is shown in the background of the picture of Silent Running, on Three O'Clock Rock). This towering dome is reminiscent of Yosemite National Park, though being in western Washington it is festooned with bushes and there is even a tiny henlock thicket located right at the summit. The climbs on the west side (Blueberry Hill) are mostly lower angled but remarkably clean granite, with the shortest route eight pitches long. The climbs from the east (Witch Doctor Wall) are generally steeper, though there are some bolted friction climbs on the apron below the steep wall higher up where the established routes are old aid lines from the 60's and 70's. These are adventure climbs.
Nearest town or city: Darrington
Directions: Exfoliation Dome stands above the left fork of Clear Creek road, less than a mile past where it crosses Clear Creek, about five miles from the Mountain Loop Highway. To reach Witch Doctor Wall, walk up left on an overgrown spur road about 1/2 mile past the bridge over Clear Creek, follow the stream, and look for a trail in the woods on the right. To reach Blueberry Hill, hike up the stony wash that is the second of two gullies crossing that left fork of the Clear Creek road. Stones give way to the steep slabs of the Granite Sidewalk. Be careful, as 500 foot falls are possible here. The climbs are mostly to the left. Descents are described in the guidebooks - they are perhaps not quite as unpleasant as suggested, but no descent from the top of the Dome is straight-forward.
