About Whipporwill:

A great area with a wide variety of easy through 5.12 sport climbing and easy through 5.11 trad climbing (with many fine climbs in the 5.10 range). Whippoorwill is south facing and gets full sun all afternoon long, which makes it a premium winter crag. Also in winter, when the lake level is down, Whippoorwill routes are accessible from bottom to top. In summer, the bottoms of most routes are under water, which makes for fine water bouldering/soloing, although falling/jumping is technically illegal. Be forewarned.
Nearest town or city: Summersville
Directions: Countinue across the bridge on 19-s from Summersville. Make a right on Whippoorwill Road (about 1/10th of a mile past the bridge). From Fayetteville, drive as for Summersville Lake, but when you're within sight of the bridge, make the last possible left onto Whippoorwill Road. Follow the road downhill to the second left (dirt road with parking at entrance). Travel this trail past a campsite, down and left. Cut down the steep, often muddy hill. You should see a few sport climbs on your right on the way down.
