Description:
From Casa Aida, walk along the road to a major road leading up towards the mountain. Hike up the cobblestone road until it turns into a path. Hike through extremely steep paramo until a traverse towards the low point in the crater rim is obvious. Much 3rd and 4th class scrambling leads from the low point past several false summits to the true summit. This is a very long hike from La Esperanza, gaining over 7000 feet of altitude. If you can get a ride to the end of the road it shortens it considerably, but this is still no joke. The paramo is difficult to hike up or down, the footing along the crater is treacherous, and the cobblestone road will destroy your knees on the way down. In spite of these drawbacks, this is one of my favorite climbs in Ecuador as you will almost certainly have the mountain to yourself and the views of Cotacachi and Cayambe are stunning.
Numerous toproping possibilities exist along the crater walls if you have any energy left after reaching the summit, but I didn't attempt any. The rock is loose and protection is poor so leading is probably not a good idea. Difficulty is F, though strenuous and exposed.

Ascent Note
I used to "train" on this mountain when I lived near Cotacachi as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Great times, running up to the summit with my dog from Ibarra, and descending into a friend's village. Perfect work-out hike for more technical peaks (Antisana, Cayambe, Sangay, El Altar)
