CCH ALIENS -- For Immediate Release

* I have been asked by CCH, to publish the following statement on their behalf.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Orange CCH Alien cam that was reportedly involved in the Paradise Forks incident, has turned out to be dated 10-05, rather than the highly publicized date of early 2004. This information has been verified the by the Coconino County Sheriffs Depart both verbally and in photographic form, with Dave Waggoner of CCH, during CCH’s own internal investigation. It is however still unknown if this unit was clearly dimpled.
The window of the recall was 11-04 to 12-05, thus any Alien cams date coded during this period should be tested, dimpled or not.
CCH will tensile test customers’ Aliens, of any manufacture date at no charge, to ensure that they will withstand a fall. Testing is done to 2/3 the rated tensile strength. After testing, all cams are currently being identified with a “Tensile Tested” stamp on the main swage above the loop. We will test and return cams to our customers within 1 week of receiving them.
Please attach your complete contact information to each unit being returned for testing, to facilitate a speedy turn-around.

Thanks Bob.
CCH is fully aware that they have had PR issues in the past, and there actually are a couple of us working diligently behind the scenes to assist them in not repeating history.
In regards to this incident, if you've kept up with the latest threads, you'll notice that I got very quiet as of about last Thursday, when our footwork started to pan out. The information was confirmed last Friday verbally, but it was felt to be prudent to not release any type of a statement until written and photographic evidence had been received, which finally came through yesterday.

I'm sure folks around here would appreciate pictures of the cam being posted. This cam being a 2005 cam with a dimple would color this whole event quite differently.
The absence of a dimple, on the other hand, would lend some sceptecism to the "outside contractor" proposed mode of previous failures.
A lot of people would be very excited about seing this handled well. I'm loath to retire my few aliens. I can't immagine how those with a couple dozen feel.

Thanks for that tgreene, I love my Aliens way too much to just abandon them with some knee jerk reaction. Would CCH ever consider testing each and every cam they manufacture? Is the testing process costly?

Transparency of the investigation and honesty is the MOST important to re-establish confidence.
I am glad you guys are helping CCH get into a more reputable position.
It is important indeed to hear if the cam involved was dimpled or not.
Also you should help CCH post some pics of their test rig, how they do it, and explain how people can do their own testing at a crag if they so desire [see the related thread].

I am NOT an employee of CCH, nor have I ever been.
In regards to my statements about others' equipment, I stated what I did solely for the purposes and intents of clarifying that all companies tend to have issues at times, and that all companies do not necessarily suffer from not immediately issuing recall notices or warning statements. Regardless of how you may feel about a BD cam spring pooping out of place or a Metolius thumb bar breaking due to misdrilled holes, these are still factually considered failures... smaller in scope of course, but failures none the less.
FWIW: I've probably spent more time on the phone w/ Dave, demanding specific information and statements over the past year, than anyone else, and I've done so because I desire to see CCH provide niche cams that are unquestionably safe.
Much of what I'm doing for CCH, is what I generally do for a living, and it's also the very same reason that I've been able to put together the Bachar Raffle as quickly as I have... I make phone calls, ask questions, make requests, and provide the best possible results for all involved.
In many instances, my motives and integrity will forever be questioned due simply to the "projects" that I've taken on, but so be it, I do it because I can!
Now, for 100% absolute complete clarification, I have not been paid a dime by CCH for involving myself in this whole process, nor do I expect to ever be. However, once the aire has cleared, I will be developing a new website for them in exchange for 1 complete set of Aliens.... Now, that really doesn't sound like a whole helluva lot of payment for what I have voluntarily put myself through in regards to forever being singled out and beaten down publicly, and especially since the online aspects of my involvement are completey without compensation of any sort.
Now, in regards to posting this for them, Dianne called me this morning to state that she tried to get online and she kept getting into a loop that would not allow her to post, so they asked if I would be willing to do so for them. Additionally, I helped "polish" the statement, because again, that's what I do (AP Photojournalist in another life). Also, in regards to the lack of photos at this point in time, I actually wanted to hold the statement a bit longer to be able to include them with it, but Dave stressed the urgency of getting it online ASAP, and that as soon as Dianne was back in the office, he would have her email them to me, to be included.
Oh yeah, J_Ung was fully brought up to date in regards to this yesterday when he called me to discuss something else, so he too knew it was in fact forthcoming, yet also that it was not his place to say anything until such a time as a statement had been posted. While he's personally told me I'm nuts to want to be involved on numerous occassions, he's also always known the full extent of my involvement from day one.

Good work identifying this as part of the recall batch, and getting the word out.
Given that this was a near-fatal accident, I suggest that CCH, the gear shops (including REI), and all climbers redouble their efforts to spread the word about the recall.
There are clearly people still climbing on unrecognized faulty gear.

You have to admit the irony is beyond absurd, when in this and other CCH threads my integrity and intents are questioned over and over again, while at the very same time in another active thread my integrity and intents are receiving ultimate praise...
Since you've all demanded so much honesty and transparency from me in this thread, I'll give it to ya... I have to honestly wonder why I still visit this site, because it's times like right now when I seriously begin to question my own involvement in the community, and the only answer I'm able to come up with is, "Why bother..?"

tim, i did not pose my question to piss you off. Honestly, i wanted to know if you were an employee or representative for CHH. By submitting a press release, it suggested some relationship between you and the company.
as for the questions about bd and metolius cams, i was wondering if you had some info i was unaware of, regarding those products.

Mate, that is simple human nature. The tall poppy syndrome if you will. It doesn't matter what endeavour you put yourself out for if you are highly prominent then there are a small number of people who will want to chop you down to size. This will be so in whatever forum you find yourself in be that real life or online. You have to understand this from the outset of any endeavour otherwise the bastards will get you down and you will never set out to achieve anything.
Keep going and don't let the tards get you down. Don't ever be afraid to start any project for fear that a small minded person will want to drag you down to their level. Do the things that you do for the right motives at the outset and you have a firm foundation that will be unshakeable amidst the criticism. Surely you have learned by this time that there are those faceless people online that wish that others are not successful at anything they set out to achieve.
Keep at it and don't allow yourself to be put down. Good works will be their own defence against those that would see you chopped down. Others will come to your defence based on a high degree of integrity exhibited over time.
Now don't stuff up, keep your integrity high and you will win in the end.
