Mt-Orford Quebec is Closed

Bad news, Access to Mt-Orford is closed. Member Lola went ther Sunday April 18th only to find out that the parking area was locked. After a short walk, they got to the trail head and a sign was posted indicating that the cliffs where closed to climbing. Reason: A study on falcon nesting is on-going. No information about duration of the study No information if we can still have access to the bouldering area No information on who'm to call I contacted the FQME (Quebec's governing body for climbing access issues) and no-one was there yet. I'm waiting for a return call. Incidently, their website wasn't responding because they forgot to renew the domain name... No wonder we don't have access to some areas... if they negotiate access like they maintain they're website... I'll post news when I get them... You can also go to my website for more information.

The FQME has no jurisdiction over Orford, because Orford is a provincial park. You would probably find more information on the Gvt's pages. As to forgetting to renew their domain, typical Fédé. I can't believe we still accept its existence. They can't renew their insurance last year, they forget their domain this year.

Just goes to show how well we are represented! I still think it's the FEDE that should represent the climbing community at the Gov for access issues. I did send an email to the park admins... I also called the FEDE for their domain name and to ask them about Orford. Now what? I'm just waiting for information from any of them!

Got a call from the FEDE... they where not aware of the closure. They also didn't say anything about what they'd do... I guest it's just wait and see.

I just received this bit of news from The Alpine Club of Canada: CLOSURES ON CERTAIN CLIMBING AREAS IN THE HIGH PEAKS REGION OF THE ADIRONDACKS Effective immediately, cliffs will be closed to rock climbing at three locations to protect peregrine falcons. ALL routes on Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain and Moss Cliff at Wilmington Notch will be closed to climbing. At Chapel Pond, all routes on the Washbowl Cliff and Lower Washbowl Cliffs will be closed. Routes on the Spider's Web, and all climbing areas west of NY Rt. 73 will remain open to climbing at this time. These cliff closures will remain in effect until June 10, or until peregrine falcon nest sites are confirmed. Once nest sites are confirmed, climbing routes which may disturb nesting will remain closed, but routes which we determine to have no impact on falcons will be opened to climbers. I will inform you at that time. NEW PLANS TO REGULATE BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY IN THE HIGH PEAKS REGION OF THE ADIRONDACKS FOR THE BACKPACKER Effective immediately, overnight stays in this area will require the use of bear barrels. More information as to their availability will be made at a later date as far as local purchases or rental in the High Peaks region. Enforcement of this new regulation will likely occur for the 2005 season.

Here's the latest about Mt-Orford. - The cliffs are always closed from Oct. 31 till May 1st - Yes, this year a falcon couple was seen and if nesting occurs, cliffs would be closed till end of July If they close for a longer period of time (past May 1st), I'll post the information here and on my website. Someone at the park is suppose to notify me if this happens.

Mount-Orford will open as usual on May 1st at 8h00am. The falcons have gone their way and the possible closure has been lifted. Good news for climbers... many thanks to all the crowes that make those cliffs a bad breading ground for falcons! No more excuses... go out and climb!
