This is a beautiful little 1 inch long sea slug from the California coast. It feeds on animals related to sea anemones which have stinging cells for defense. For some reason the stinging cells don't explode when Hermissenda feeds on them. Instead the stinging cells migrate to those colorful plumes which you see on the back of the sea slug. There, the stinging cells become part of Hermissenda's arsenal of defense.
