redpointron returns to the rockies okay, so i hate to refer to myself in the third person, BUT, the headlines are true… even though the forces have seemed to conspire against it happening – i will be coming back to colorado this september for another soiree. the logistics are as follows… date – friday night, september 9th through sunday, september 11th plane tix are in the process of being purchased. sorry, i cannot change the date. location – shelf road, sand gulch campground (like last year) i mean, come on, no one’s aversion to bolts is so great that you can’t come humor the hillbilly for a weekend. so…show up or you’re off the christmas card list  regards. r.r.

If I fly into DIA or Colo Spgs, can someone pick me up at the airport? If so, I'll see if I can shake down the woman for enoughpesos to buy a plane ticket. Otherwise, I'll drive. Or hitch hike. Or walk. Or ride a horse. Or whatever. But I'm in.

Hi Ron, you don't know me but most everyone who is coming to the shindig does. Hope you don't mind if I show up. This party sounds like something way too fun to miss. Tracy and Lisa will give me a good reference. So will Dave, Brad and Nate. AND, I bake really good brownies.

In reply to: The entire horse thing is startin to freak me out. Understandable. On a related note, I recommend that should you drop a biner at this shindig, it's best to kick it all the way to Canon City before bending over to pick it up. No, wait. Canon City is a prison town -- scratch that idea. So just do what I do -- don't drop anything.

This sucks, but I got no choice: I'm out. Can't afford the time off and the trip, as I've got things I need to pay first... electric, morgtage, etc. I really hate to bail, but I just have no choice. Though if my numbers win the lotto this week, all that might change. Sorry, gang. Have fun, drink one for me, and I'll see you soon.

Since we are announcing arrival times we should get there around 11 or midnight. I guess thats what I get for working to much. Hopefully we can leave the boat earlier, but it is looking like another long week, and it's only Monday morning!!! By the way, are we going to try to get the same camp site as last year? It will make it easier for those of us who get there after dark to find the party!!! Ron, you can take away those ??? after Mrs. Steamboatclimber, she will be there. See you all soon. Judson

Heya, none of you have ever met me, except through this site, to state the obvious. Anyhow, my partner and I will probably be at Shelf Labor Day, so how would you guys feel about some party crashers from cotton country. We may have as many as 4 other climbers come along with us, most of which are in my photo gallery (if your curious). Anyhow, if we come, what should we bring? I will assume that this is BYOB, or your list would be much longer. You guys know how Free Beer draws a crowd. I would make brownies, but it looks like nicerack's got that nailed down, and besides, my brownies are magical, they make you laugh, stumble, slurr, and say 'Dude!" a lot. So when will this party be coming together anyhow, or is it all weekend long? Thoughts anyone?

I should work on my reading comprehension a bit more! Never-the-less, we will toxify ourselves in the spirit of things! You still doing the Wham Ridge? I am jealous. Balsam Lake is just incredible see from the ridge line. Well, see you guys have fun and keep it safe.

Yeah, I'm still doing Wham Ridge but the weekend of the 16th. I'll have my boys all weekend over Labor Day so we're going to camp/hike/climb/fish/bike, etc over the weekend. It's possible we may end up at Shelf if I can find a partner. You should leave a note at the snadgulch bathroom bulletin board letting me know where you're at. I'll swing by if we make it down there. I'd rather be in the mountains though so I'm not sure.

I may have two or more others coming down too. Is the plan to get the Sand Gulch group site and probably nearby campgrounds? We were at the bank campground last weekend and the annoying campground host seemed to be gone. None the less, there may be one there. Also, there has been some talk on the side with some of the others coming down of getting a keg. Are people down for kicking some $$ in for this? Thinking of getting something like Fat Tire or Flying Dog Amber.

i don't mean to change the pace or throw or blanket on the bash, but FEMA and the state of indiana have asked for assistance from frontline firefighters during the hurricane relief effort. i have had this trip planned and tix bought for several months but as a firefighter, a former soldier, and more importantly a pretty fortunate father and husband, i feel compelled to volunteer to help. my services may not be needed until later, if at all, but the possibility exists that i may not be there. i post this message for no other reason than to let everyone, the friends i know and those i'll meet for the first time, know what is up and implore you all to still show up...and have a blast. i will keep you posted... regards r.r.

Ron, your the man. I may have to cut the weekend shot as I seem to be covering for a couple guys who have already left for baton rouge. I think I can get out saturday, we will see. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get from beuna vista to shelf road? (Jeff???) I think I can swing the weekend if I can find a shorter way from Steamboat to Shelf. Judson

Right on Ron. Hope I get to meet you this time. If not, another time, aye? Can someone give me directions to the Bulging Nads campground? Lisa and I are driving down Friday afternoon. As we may be some of the first to arrive, I want to make sure we are in the right place. Not that I've ever had any trouble finding bulging nads, but just in case.

well, it's been an up & down past three days.... first, we weren't going to be going, then we were, then we weren't, then the united states fire administration called this morning.... well, to make a long story short...we were activated, but my dept. cannot afford to deploy a third team until one of the other teams returns early next month. been a bit of a roller coaster. so, for the time being, it appears that i will be flying to denver on thursday (although, truth be told, i hardly feel like it anymore) and all will go as previously scheduled... somebody lighten the mood... :? regards r.r.

Hey Ron and everyone - Not sure I can entirely lighten the mood, but I did finally arrive in the great state of Colorado...and couldn't be happier to be here. Having people like you to help out in times like this is what makes our country great, Ron, and although I have not met you (or anyone here....yet!) I am sure I speak for all when I say that everyone can't wait to see you this weekend if all works out...and to have a safe safe flight out to Colorado. Jen

So on that list of almost 30 peeps, I may be "a guy named 'dan'". Though there are many Dan's out there. Hmmm... Anyway, I am totally there. I'll be arriving with a girl (username 'climbingchicago') and maybe a friend of hers. Just for clarification... I believe the campsite to be Sand Gulch. Will there be open fire for cooking some goodies? I'll contribute what I can to pay for the site and drinks and whatever else there may be. (God, I love the climbing community)

(ie if we brought stuff for Saturday morning would you cook?) ahahaha. And by the way, I'm totally banking on hearing a true yodle! Cindy - I'm assuming that since you're saying we're leaving at noon I can show up around 1-2 pm and just about catch you ready? *duck & run* Shorty - only one day???? Are you crazy? :) Anyone heard from Kelly..would love to see her again at Shelf. Can't wait to see u all again, or for the first time.

Sadly, it looks like your going to have to take me off the list. Unforseen circumstances have plotted against my trip to the south. Hope you guys all have a great time down there, as I know you will. If RedpointRon = RR does High Altitude Hoosier = HAH ?? I think RR works much better as you sig Ron. Judson

Just to give you an update, you can add ukwill & splat to the list. Nastycrimp and four other non rc.com'rs should be making it too. and Cody of course. You'll never know he is there though. http://i2.photobucket.com/...lonJuly92005_033.jpg

Ok, I have reserved a keg of Flying Dog Old Scratch (amber) for the shindig. With the rental, cups, ice, beer, tap, and tub it should come to about $5 a person if the amount of people listed show up and most are drinking. Cindy as mentioned I got a tub. Davidson's Liqour said they will have it ready for us on Friday and a noon pickup (or later) should not be a problem. Get a hold of me and I will meet you to load that sucker up and send you on your way. Try to save some beer for me, I won't be able to get down to Shelf until 9 probably 10pm on Friday  . Bob, where are you drilling? Looking forward to see you all there.

Yeah, so I hear talk of kegs and drinks and all that stuff, but does anything else need to be picked up and tugged along out to this wonderful place.... Yes, like no-oreos said I have no idea who anyone is, where all you insane folks are gathering, and what craziness I will be subjected to. I am with no-oreos though, I am easily overwhelmed and that will just make it a great experience. Cant wait to meet all you!

For those who remain concerned with the Nads Bulge campground: Associated Press: Bend, Oregon 100-Square-Mile Bulge Keeps Getting Bigger A recent survey of a bulge that covers 100 square miles near the South Sister indicates the area is still growing, suggesting it could be another volcano or a major shift of molten rock under the center of the Cascade Range. They say it probably began in 1997 and has been rising ever since at a rate of 1.4 inches per year. OK, so 1.4 inches may not seem like much, but after 8 years that comes to 11.2 inches. And 100 square miles. Now that's a bulge.

Swing by REI, The Wilderness Exchange, or what ever climbing shop is near you and pick up the Shelf Road guide. The crags are a little spread out. I am tenatively planning on climbing at the contest wall, though that may change. I am sure there will be several groups at different crags.

People; since my partner decided to be a soccer mom this weekend, I'll have plenty of space in my car. So whoever needs a ride, let me know (PM or 303-808-4796). I'm planning on leaving Friday around noon from Broomfield, it can be changed to earlier or later time if necessary. I'm going to be back on Sunday.

Uh, ok Tracy...yes more Red Bull. I'm bringing plenty of "shot material" but no To Killa (aka Lisa behaving badly brew) for me so you'll have to bring your own poison of that. I tried like hell find a tee-shirt that has the word STRIPPER and the red circle with a line through it.... :) No go dammit. Aaron - my camera can hold about 700+ pictures so I'm just gonna apologize ahead of time for everything that gets posted :) I've sold my first born to help pay for gas in Lucille so I think I'm set now.

I've got firewood covered. No need for anyone else to worry about it. I have plenty to pull from. I'm likely to be one of the first there so I'll post some paper plates with signage indicating where were at for those directionally challenged individuals. Later if it gets really out of hand we can string ropes from the campfire out to the tents of the less mobile.

An early teaser from the Shelf Shindig... Two of our well-loved locals spent Saturday night in a stupor and unable to successfully navigate their way to the tent or car. One passed out in the dirt, mere inches from safety and security in the back of their grey, square, SUV and the other succumbed to gravity in the vicinity of a rocky patch between the scrub oak. Both recovered after partaking of Jeff's excellent eggs benedict and then climbed briefly on Sunday. Hands down, Jen Swift won the highest accolades for being the most spirited joke and sick story teller Saturday night. Incriminating photos to come. Update: Said, hung-over individuals later hiked up to Sand Gulch and proceded to attempt some climbing. Unfortunately, the eggs came a callin' again and barf was summarily ejected by both with great gusto into the piney woods between belays. This was unfortunately not photo documented.

my apologies to all for not making it. i had a low tire, and when i went to air it up, i discovered that it was low because it had a nail in it. :? :? i'm (hopefully) getting the tire fixed tomorrow, but i decided that pushing my luck on unimproved, steep roads after a three hour drive at 80-90mph probably wouldnt be the best idea. :)

In reply to: An early teaser from the Shelf Shindig... What a fun time. It was cool to see all of you people there! My "nap" in the woods was quite nice. I was one with the earth. heheh. To those of you who passed me shots throughout the night, I'M GONNA GET YOU FOR THAT!!! Between the barfing belays, I managed to get 7 routes in which wasn't too bad considering my condition. I may go back next Sat night/Sunday if anyone wants to head up. Tim and Deven. . .I owe you 2 dudes.

Someone hit your car?? That sucks. Glad to hear it's ok. Had just about THE best weekend. Great seeing all you familiar faces, and glad to meet all the "new" faces (although, I have a feeling I still didn't get to meet everyone that was there). I laughed so hard Friday night "guarding" the keg and telling......stories (something about an A.V.??). Great way to end the summer! When do we get to do it again?! By the way, whoever has photographic documentation of Cindy Lou Who's Do..... PLEASE PLEASE post up! That's one to keep around for a while

And some random thoughts and quotable quotes from the trip (if you weren't there this probably wouldn't mean anything to you). Keep in mind that I"m probably taking most of this out of context which makes it all the much better. Sound bites: "Hey look, it's the puke and poop gang" (Lisa and Cindy) "Ron, I loved looking at your bulging muscle" (Cindy) "How bout that hummer?" (Devon) "Whats a hummer?" (Tracy) "Mmmm, oh yea, ahhh that's it" and variable sighs (Fran, Cindy and James at my hands muwahahaha) "SHITOLA" (Cindy Lou Who) "Big boobs may not good for you to climb with but it's good for the belayer" (Ken) "Damn I crushed my nuts!" Just notes to the gang..... Jeff, your cooking and yodling put you on the A list..now only if you could hold a freakin cup! Gary Aposta"Razzi" - way to blind everyone with your flash. And dude, that relative humidity joke was just WRONG Tracy - I only stocked the liquor locker, I didn't spoon feed it to you...don't get me back :) Devon Downey Jr - thanks for the tip on hangover cures Ken - Walla Walla huh? Do you know anyone there or just circle the campsites Skibby - Get the RV! (but not before we get the WP shindig done) Steve - ya know that video, with the shower scene? I paid ya right? It disappeared right? You're so quiet, I hope you weren't bored sitting there all subdued in the evenings Dina - Sing it girl! Charley - Did I get that right...you teach? OMFG and we wonder why our kids are like, "Dude, FKNA" ;) Vince - Play it boy...never seen a dude so into that thingamagigy (oh yea, and send me your email so I can send you that pic) Nate - going to naked, drug induced festivals seems...well right up your ally, carry on Tim - Way to save the intoxicated Alec - How are your potassium levels? Rick - Sorry if youre scarred for life. I realize that Annapolis probably has a much different flavor than our group did Will - so do you mind being objectified for your accent? Ron - you OBVIOUSLY don't mind being objectified for your bulging muscle Fran - no more over the handlebars! Kelly - find anything else scattered in your car after sat night? Teresa - I hope your daughter wasn't scarred for life Damn I have a lOT more but I think I've taken up enough space for now. Thanks all! And Cindy Lou Who - I luv ya best gurl!

In reply to: I wanted to thank y'all for the long distance drunk dial at 11pm. Brought a tear to my eye, it did. *sniff* Is that because you miss us terribly and feel bad for not showing up, or because you had to get up at 4am and we woke you from a sound sleep? :D

Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcomed to the insanity this past weekend. I had a great time getting to know you guys and learn some more about climbing. Thanks to those of you, Jen, Dan, Scott, Mark, Alec, Brad, etc....who had the patience with me and taught me a whole lot about the techniques of climbing. Am proud to say I climbed my first trad today with Rick and I am alive. Hah.....I can laugh now but I was a bit terrified, I must admit, while climbing. I am basically a newbie at this stuff! Anyway....great fun.....look forward to meet with you all again and climbing. As for now, these feet need a break! Take care all!!! And Ron, thanks for the getting this shin dig together. You ROCK! B

Many thanks to Lisa. The best first mate I could ever ask for. Of course, this is BEFORE she got totally shitfaced, stumble into Lucille, fall down, pass out, snorting in her sleep DRUNK. Yep, keeper of the little green liquor locker did the ol' lip lock on the Jeagermeister (sp?) and had herself a Par-tay. Thanks for sharing all your goodies, co-piloting skills, sense of humor and friendship. http://FileLibrary.MYAASite.Com/.../7/7432/11126639.jpg Gary, you forgot to post this one of you showing off your 'sure to make the girls come a runnin' attribute. You know you're my favorite  http://i2.photobucket.com/...adShinding05_008.jpg Best climbing weekend ever! Here's my version of an award acceptance speech. Ron, thanks for initiating such a great time. Can we puhleeze do it again next year? And don't forget to bring your bulging muscle, aye? Tim, gold star to you for your heroic acts. Tracy and Aaron, gold stars to you both for needing heroic acts. The puke fest on belay was hysterical. Aaron, your comment about photographic evidence not being good to you? Right on. Want that big greasy bacon sandwich served on an ashtray? Jeff, thanks for the cooking, the belay, and the beta to get me up that route. You can borrow my big spoon and my tin foil anytime. Lee, if you're ever up this way, give a holler. And don't forget to wear your shirt unbuttoned to your navel. I hear the women in Parker go wild for such things. Ken, you're a sleeper. Didn't know a person could say such funny stuff and keep a straight face. BTW, thanks for the catch when I fell. Rick, you were a brave lad to climb with us on Saturday. Steve, OMFG, I'm sooooo glad you came down to provide the entertainment. Could have done without the bongo thing right outside my window until 3:00 a.m. but oh well. Vince, eat some bread and SOAK THAT SHIT UP! Charlie, best version of kum-ba-yah I've ever heard. Jen, Colorado is a better place with you here. Red Wings Suck! Dina, glad you didn't get mad when we stormed Gary's tent in a drunken herd. Will, pfffttttt, Denver is better than LA. Stick around for awhile and teach me that drop knee technique you do so well. And that drinking technique you do so well. Jen, ice and tylenol, ice and tylenol, ice and tylenol. Kelly, thanks for the back rub. Fran, Lucille's door is always open. Nate, you're welcome for the banana boat. Thanks for saving my seat. Scott, good to meet you. Hope to climb with you someday. Martha, good to see you out again. Shindigs are better when you show. Deven, will your license plate read 'toothless' when you buy that hummer? Like toothless hummer? hahahahahaha Dan, my fridge will always have a spot for your soup. And to all the rest, Beth, Heather, Mike, Scott, James, Alec, Perry, Eric, Teresa, etc, etc, thanks for making this outing f'ing awesome.

Holy crap! Lisa, you're funny! I had no idea you were shooting me while I was shooting my breakfast! Heading back down to Shelf on Sat night if anyone wants to come. So far it's me, Deven and Ron. I have room in my car for 1 more victim. Torrey was very thankful for all of the belly rubs and scratches behind the ears by the way. You guys were all so much fun. :D And Jeff. . .thanks again for being so hospitable and such an excellent cook.

In reply to: That's it! There is NO WAY I am missing this party next year. Glad everyone enjoyed/survived the weekend. Welcome back I must 2nd this sentiment. Driving to SA with two PMSing women, getting sick (not from consumption), and getting rained out for Sunday at E-Rock....not cool. Shelf sounds like it was the place to be. Insipired by your humble gathering....I have set out to organize my own drunken barn dance down in Carlsbad at LCC! I think my favorite thing so far is the barfing belays! Reminds me of Mexico this winter! It was a climbing trip, if we wern't climbing we were drinking, if we wern't drinking we were eating, if we weren't eating we were sleeping, and that is about it, and don't forget your helment.

:!: Would it be impolite to inquire whether this kind of large gathering - and its disregard of the (limited) rules of the BLM campground - runs the risk of undoing all the hard work that went into securing the help of the BLM in establishing Shelf Road in the early days?

I humbley suggest you all whip each other with a cat o' nine tails in drag whilst reading passages from the BLM rulebook. Note: the campground was as clean or cleaner when we left than when we arrived. That is the primary thing that matters. In addition, I moved rockfall out of the road for the benefit of the local drivers as well as myself. And I totally was going to smoke out this old farmer guy, but he just smiled and showed me his own stash.

Nah, not impolite at all. Actually people were camping at nearby sites as well, spreading it out. Plus we paid for the number of people and like Tim said, we cleaned everything up really well. :)

bclimb: You can't have the pic only on your hard drive... it has to be hosted on the internet somewhere. Try this: Go to http://www.imageshack.us/ and upload the photo there. Then use the "direct link to image" url they give you and insert THAT into the post here on RC.com It sounds complicated, but it isn't. PM me if you have more questions.

I finally had a moment to sit at the ole computer and wow, did we have fun? I'm wore out. Great time with everyone climbing/parteeeing at Shelf and a couple of great days climbing at the Black with Ron.

Anyone lose their Shelf guide? Evidently someone thought Todd's car was their car and put a guidebook in there. I can retrieve it for whoever lost it. Send me a pm.
