OFFICIAL STATEMENT My fellow RC.com climbers: It is my unfortunate responsibility to inform you that the gathering will not occur as originally scheduled on Friday, Nov 1st to Sunday, Nov, 3rd. Allow me to explain: As popularity of the gathering increased, concern was raised by the climbing community that such an event would stress the access sensitivity of Birdsboro. Ten years ago, the area was opened after much negotiations. After that, sensitivity remained in limbo. However, with time, the access today is quite lax. Nonetheless, PA climbers are all too familiar with access problems. Gems like Safe Harbor, Sex Wall, and Governor Stables are---or once closed as a result of access issues. And it is no one’s intention for such a place as Birdsboro to once again be added to the list. When such a concern was raised, Mitch and myself began to investigate. Our finding from Birdsboro Town Hall were quite positive. However, under the advise of the Access Fund, we were required to receive written permission for such an official gathering to take place. Unfortunately, in regards to obtaining an approval through the legal matters we were given definite answer. Birdsboro town hall is researching the matter, but they have not made any promises. Under such uncertainty in regards to how long such a process would take, we are forced to inform everyone of this situation and officially call off the gathering. However, it should be stated that climbing is still permitted at Birdsboro. Please keep in mind these concerns! Be responsible and courteous! In retrospect, talk of the gathering has raised concerns which needed to be addressed; efforts are underway to reform the Birdsboro Access Committee which will bridge conversation between the town and climbers, the Access Fund and the Pennsylvania Alliance of Climbers. Furthermore, it is our hope that certain improvements will be the result of continued effort of the part of the climbing community. Mitch has told me that he is still offering his backyard for those that would like to get a taste of some of the other areas in SE PA. If the weather turns sour, a possible indoor gathering at Cliffhangers in Reading (15 minutes from Birdsboro) is still being considered. Furthermore, I understand that other impromptu gatherings are in the works. Please PM myself or Mitchal for more information and any concerns. Once again we apologize for such an inconvenience. Stay tuned to RC.com for future details regarding access, initiatives, etc. Climb on—responsively—my fellow climbers, Randy Stuff that doesnt't matter anymore....welcome to the Birdsboro Gathering Command Post. I'm going to keep all the vital information on this first posting so we don't all have to dig through this huge thread. Please continue to post questions and concerns. LINKS: BACK TO GATHERING LISTING CAMPING THREAD GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER WILL YOU BE THERE ON FRIDAY LUNCH SIGNUP FOOD THREAD CAMPING FrequentlyAskedQuestions (No need to look through 100+ posts!!!) : What kind of climbing does Birdsboro offer? Mitchal describes the climbs as nearly three dozen granite sport climbs ranging for 5.6 to 13. These climbs also have toprope potential for the newbies. Where can I stay? Mitchal(mitchal) has offered his backyard for camping. Nate(mmindtrap) says "Ok, here is what I hava avalable for lodging: One futon bed that can sleep two people, One foam mat that is the size of a twin bed, and one couch. Floor space is also avalable if anyone wants that, or if you own a cot. Just let me know if you want to stay at my place, and we can make the necessary plans. -Nate-" Also, camping is available at French Creek State Park. However, alcohol is forbidden at the state park. ** Get Directions to Mitch's or Nate's by clicking on their name and sending them a PM! What about food? We've concluded that we're going to meet at Dante's Depot in our FOOD THREAD. Meeting Time: 7 PM. Saturday breakfast will be made seperately at Mitch and Nate's place. For lunch, if interest is shown, lunch meat can be bought locally to make subs at the rock. Saturday dinner will consist of a Chili Cook-out; we are considering other alternatives for the dinner, for those of us who don't like chili. Let us know with your ideas! Sunday breakfast and lunch will basically be the same as Saturday and Sunday dinner, for most, will be on their way home! What about all this access talk? Just come as a responsible climber aware that we want to represent RC.com and the climbing community as well as possible, leaving only footprints! Directions? Where are we meeting? For the Friday crowd, we're meeting at Dante's Depot for dinner @ 7PM. If you follow the same directions as listed for the rock area, you find Dante's located on the right after you ignore the detour signs for Rt 82 South. PM who ever you're staying at to discuss whether you're going to drop in before we meet to eat. (And maybe a quick pump session at the rock beforehand!) Saturday, you can park at Hay Creek and follow the signs into the rock (about a 10 easy minute walk). Anne has assured everyone that the signs will be easy to follow and you'll run into everyone at the rock face. We've listed where everyone is coming from in case you need a ride! Thanksgiving weekend sounds good to me.It is awful late in the fall though, don't you think? If it's a day off extra during the weekend you were hoping for, most people don't get that day anymore, damned employers are too stingy. I'm good for any weekend after 10-13. How 'bout some more suggestions, then a vote. Climb Happy Mitch

Early this spring Miagi and I both attended a get together in Dunbar, PA (south western PA) at a place the locals call the Lost Crag. Some more of you might have been there as well? Anyway, a few local climbers there have done an awesome job setting a batch of sport and trad routes and have put a ton of time (and money) into mapping out the crag and the routes. There are at least 65 routes in this small area (but no real multi pitch stuff). There are also several other small crags located within an hour's driving from the Lost Crag and Ohiopyle State Park is right down the road offering camping, biking, hiking, and rafting. Everyone should check out Tim Anderson's web site : www.climbpa.com . Look under "Rock Climbing PA" and click on "Western PA Crags". You'll find Lost Crag and several other Dunbar areas there. Since it's in southern PA the camping and climbing should still be nice and warm in September and early October.

I would be willing to do something. The middle 2 weekends of November would work for me. Thanksgiving might work depending on the day. There is one thing that must happen if we do this and that is we have to get lost.

Sorry to interupt this thread. This has nothing to do with getting together to climb, but instead getting together to camp and get drunk. A local bar that my band plays at has a party every year that anyone is invited to. You can check it out at http://www.thenail1.com. It is called Wheelstock. The event is completely free, but you have to be 21 or older. I'd be willing to transport a few people from Philadelphia. It's really cool to camp out with a bunch of friends and get together with people you don't know. FREE BEER, FREE FOOD! PM me if interested.

not to knock to the T-Hangs but theres not that much to get excited about. Sure, the bouldering is decent, but that's it. And the only reason that the locals go there is because there's nothing else open cuz of the railroad. Even Chickies seems limiting, I'd like to head elsewhere, expand my horizons.... How about up around Mocanaqua, I hear theres is tons of rock. Stoney Ridge has a zoo full (actually 65 or so) sport and trad routes, short but great! Ummm....not sure where else to recommend. As for dates, anytime sounds good. Lets not plan TOO far into November, we don't want to be climbing in Football whether. Also, keep in mind of hunting...they're in full swing by Thanksgiving if that matters. God Bless, Randy PS. Its exciting to hear the great response from the PA Gang. Keep your eyes and ears posted about the Governor Stables Bouldering Comp in the Spring. Definitely AWESOME! We had atleast 100 climbers there for the FIRST COMP. I can't wait to see the numbers for next...

Here are SOME of the hunting season dates for this fall that we should consider when deciding when and where to climb: Oct. 5- Nov. 16 Archery Oct. 19-26 Antlerless deer -Muzzleloader Climbing at The Lost Crag (my orignal suggestion) might not be a good idea during these times because the crag lies on State Game Lands regulated by the PA Game Commission. Let's do something in September. Central sounds good so noone is stuck crossing the entire state on their scant free time Hey, Anne, Thanksgiving will be the week following NOVEMBER 18, not October. ~

I like the idea of shickshinny/mocanaqua....i've only been to the main wall (according to the Dbase) which has the infamous table rock at the entrance and the Pizza Route. How does that sound for Western PA guys? How is access at the other spots, Library, etc? How about the weekend of October 25th, since that would be after the gatherings which Anne brought to our attention.

ALRIGHTY...i knew i messed up with the oct thanksgiving and was waiting to see who was gonna catch that one...hmmmmmmmm, steve!!!! shoot i dunno what day it is...let alone what month thanksgiving is in...teehee!!! here is my suggestion... Birdsboro...free camping and only paintball hunting allowed...enough climbing for all of us for a weekend and never need to wait "in line"...there is a variety of sport routes. close to town and a sweet little park to eat and gather by the creek... there's trad and other sport near by at neversink...and i am game for any weekend before or after the first two weekends in oct!!! it is relativly safe for children {i have two which will prolly be with me} for those other parents out there and parents of dogs (hint hint...clymber)....they are also welcome there!!!! ****but clymber (lew) sounds like he knows about another place...how about some more beta..lew, about camping and bla bla bla...kids and dog friendliness.... welp off to west viginia today for the long weekend...ill be checking in if the old computer is working down there... thank you all for your responses, sounds like this may be a nice gathering, AND IT'S ABOUT TIME FOLKS!!!! wishing everyone health and happiness til we all meet up!!!!! ~anne [ This Message was edited by: climbinganne on 2002-08-28 05:03 ]

Hi there, I'm from reading, and I would like to join in on this gathering. If it were my choice, we should go to High Rocks(Ralph Stover). Birdsboro is nice but it can be really hard on your hands in the later months because no sun shines on the walls. Well, where evre is decided, I will be sure to attend.

Birdsboro sounds great. However, let me make a confession, I've never climbed sport before. (If I could climb as much as i'm on this stinkin website, I could flash anything) However, the reality is, that I have a whole lot of enthusiaism, but as much much climbing ability. Therefore, is there toping potenitial there as well? Also, what about the WAIVERS? Mitchal mentioned in the Birdsboro Dbase, about getting Waivers....is that something we need to look into. Especially, if we gather under the name of RC.com, we should make a good impression. Let me know....the dates sound good! And, if we get tired of Birdsboro. We can head to MT. gretna, Lancaster, Philly.... Good Location, plus easy access from the Turnpike. God Bless Randy

Ok, so far what I have as the potential gathering info is: Pennsylvania RC.com gathering Birdsboro, PA November 1-3 2002 If noone has any problems with those dates then we just need people and at least one person that knows what the hell they are doing. Just so everyone knows, I have been gym climbing for about 2 months, all TR, no lead, a "real" rock virgin, and certified at Philadelphia Rock Gym to belay with a grigri. I'm taking a class for tr climbing outside soon, and will be ice climbing come winter. Just wanted to throw that out there so everyone knew my situation.

Hi All, Anne and I climb at Birdsboro quite often.I put together the listing of routes for there. It is in the routes DB.As for waivers,I think I amended that post, waivers are no longer required to climb at the quarry, just good old manners and ethics. As this is one of my main climbing spots,I will accept bribes, gifts, etc. for beta and help on the routes there. It's possible that a few may camp out behind my place in the woods,it's been done before. I'll put more in a few,I have a car to fix. Climb Happy Mitch

Hey all, I don't know where you sign up for this, or if it is an exclusive outing, but I would love to tag along. It sounds like a good time. I'm a college student and with my schedule its hard to get weekends in like this unless I plan way in advance, so this is great for me. I would love to get away from the frat party scene for a weekend of climbing. Let me know if you all don't mind an extra climber. Thanks, Rock On, Cary

How about a little info on birdsboro. Quanity of routes and maybe a guestamate at numbers of routes per grade? I know nothing about it except what is in yhe database which is little. It still says waivers are needed. Thanks folks. [ This Message was edited by: charley on 2002-08-30 03:32 ]

I don't mind keeping dibs on who wants to go. I've never been there so I can't answer those types of questions, but it seems Mitch and Anne know about this place. So I guess if you want, PM me and I'll save it until we get more info. I'll post who I have each week day so we know the who and what. This is so going to rock! (pun intended) (My band has a show on Saturday night, Nov. 2nd at The Grape Street Pub if anyone over 21 is interested and wants to take a side trip.)

A great idea would be to post the list. Then keep EDITING IT, so we can find everyone in the same post. Now have we confirmed a date yet? Nov 1-3? PS. I must say its interesting to see all the rookies posting...that's pretty awesome it "see" so many newbies!!! [ This Message was edited by: rwaltermyer on 2002-08-29 08:17 ]

Now that it seems we've settled a date and location. I believe it would help to settle out some details. Such as:What about food? Bring some to share? Or everyone for themselves? A meeting time? Directions? (Those can probably wait) But we should identify a central meeting location if we're going to be staying at multiple locations. Others? I'm tired and can't think anymore. (First week of classes ) God Bless-->Randy

mitch...according to paone's earlier post, the only hunting that would be occuring would be archery for deer. Being a hunter, upon a time myself, I do believe that small game (rabbits, squirels, and pheasants) are open as when. But those hunters are never to worry about. How do we want to work the accomdations? I know a friend in Elverson, which I believe is just down the road, would it be best for us to spread out or concentrate everyone at the two places that have already been offered up? Another concern is parking everyone at the two houses. Are we planning on getting some climbing in friday night. Keep in mind, by Nov. its getting dark considerably earlier. Lets keep blazin' through these details guys. God Bless Randy

i've climbed at Birdsboro and have some info for you guys. there are approx 20 climbs. only two 5.8's and two 5.9's. the rest are upper level 5.10's and 5.11's, with a few 5.12's and one 5.13. in other words, it is very fun but no easy routes. all sport climbs with cold shuts as top anchors - very solid pro. hope this helps to plan your gathering. I am SO SAD about this!! I was getting so psyched for this until I read Amber's message about the grades. Count me and my crew out, I guess, 'cause I'm the only one that could climb that stuff and I'd burn fast. Oh well. Have a great time, anyway, you guys! I'll meet y'all sometime. -Steve

Well its not time to be SAD quite yet. Lets discuss this. I, myself, won't flash a ten either. However, Mitchal's earlier post seemed to describe the small"er" area as "all grades". Now, I've never been there so I'm seeking for some clarification as to what "ALL GRADES" means. I don't want this to be an upper level/elite gathering. Especially, since I originally posted this thread, and I can't climb 5.10s or above. So, lets get confirmation of the grades and work from there. If that is the case, Neversink is close by. And Chickies is within striking distance if we want to split up for an afternoon session. God Bless Randy

Hey, There are many climbs less than 10's at the area.If that isn't enough, there is the ctrag atop Neversink, which is where I live,as well as many climbs in the valley behind my house, where there will be camping, and many bouldering problems too.I have one especially in mind for you Randy,200' of 45 degree run, going uphill. Also at Birdsboro, there are spots that can be toproped at any climbing grade level you may feel comfortable at. COME ONE....COME ALL!!! Climb Happy Mitch Thanks for adding that link Randy! I take my granmama climbing there,I don't wanna hear no excuses! [ This Message was edited by: mitchal on 2002-09-02 12:29 ]

So, we've resolved the rating and abiiity situation, lets make sure to fiugre out the housing and lodging like Anne suggested. How many can Nate accommadate? Mitch, how many can you? PS. I'm definitely bringing my camera along to get some shots of the event. However, I've never established a hanging rapell. How about just TRing it? Does anyone have any suggestions? If you do, PM me, don't post it on this thread.

Ok, here is what I hava avalable for lodging. One futon bed that can sleep two people, One foam matt that is the size of a twin bed, and one couch. Floor space is also avalable if anyone wants that, or if you own a cot. Just let me know if you want to stay at my place, and we can make the necessary plans. -Nate-

Ok, out of the list of people that I have down as attending, how many can offer some sort of lodging, and how many can they fit? Also, how many people will be bringing guests not from rc.com? I will keep this tally up to date. I seemed to have lost my way when they moved the post.

Looks good on attendance so far. Someone raise the questions about Friday nite. Good point. Since it will be dark when many people get off work and they have that "out by dark" restriction, we should consider climbing Sat and Sun. As far as lodging, it would be fun to stay relatively close together. Let's not forget that French Creek State Park is only minutes away. Myself, plus 2 are still on track for staying at Mitch's, however, if enough people wanted to tent it at French Creek, we would be up for that as well! Randy, just to throw my 2 cents in, we climbed this weekend at Birdsboro. Yes, the climbs are not easy. Note, that means no 5.1-5.4. However, the 5.6 and 5.7 are actually easy. My 11 year old daughter did them both this weekend. Additionally, there will be enough people there that I am sure manyt people would not mind leading a route and setting it up as a top rope. I am sure there will be ropes hanging everywhere that weekend. So much looking fun to it!!

What is the camping situation at French Creek? Just some woods to put a tent or accomadations? Water? Bathroom/Showers? Pay? I'm sure we can keep entertained on Friday even if it'll be too dark to climb. That might be a good night to go out for a 'group dinner", that way we can meet each other, chat... otherwise, we'd be kinda seperated if we split to go to where we are staying.

As if planning this isn't enough on our plate. I'm throwing around the idea of a Chickies Rock Adopt-a-Crag Day for the Fall, maybe the Spring would be better, so we could climb the routes we scrub.... Anyway....check out that thread if you're interested. I hate to congest a thread with plugs for other topics, but I had to considering all the readings this one is getting. --Sorry guys. PA gathering @ Birdsboro Nov. 1-3 2002 Definite Attendees ------------------ Rwaltermyer (Randy) Mitchal (Mitch) Noosphere (Brian) Chris1313 (Chris) + 2 Guests Climbinganne (Anne) + 2 li'l guests Peanutbutterandjelly (Todd) Mmindtrap (Nathan) Chakan (Gregg) Clymber (Lew) Lostangel (Dianna) Might be attending ------------------ Paone (Steve) Evs786 (Evan) Msecoda (Michael) Jeepchic (Amber) Rondij (Joe) Snibdogg20 (Cary) Charley (Bill) 2 Guests for Chakan Dondiego and Miss Dondiego Bement (Andrew) Iridesantacruz (Chris) Please PM if you are definitely going and if you are bringing guests other then the ones mentioned. Also, if you plan on camping, how many are sleeping in your tent? I also need to know who can have people stay at their house, camp in their yard, or sleep on their porch, and how many you can sleep. If everyone plans on attending that is on the maybe list, we may want to invest on staying at French Creek park for a few bucks and camp out there. We would all be together then, and we sing songs of incest and prarie dogs. [ This Message was edited by: noosphere on 2002-09-04 04:04 ]

AWWWW Anne, I feel so warm and fuzzy inside. I wuv you too! I was just out back looking at how many tents can fit.I think we will have plenty of room. Can't wait. there are also spots here on the mountain that can be climbed and bouldered.Just don't be leaving your climbing shoes lying around and expect them to be there when you come looking, they just might walk off,if they are size 11,that is. Kagunkie...i believe...mentions the possibily of needing helmets. Whats everyone(s) take on that for those of you have climbed there? I don't have one and was wondering if it is a NECESSARY investment. [ This Message was edited by: rwaltermyer on 2002-09-05 08:53 ]

Remember all, like we've told 'beyond_gravity'... "It's quality not quantity." Try to keep the crap down, and just keep the replies to the details, and who's coming. Otherwise, newer users will not want to read through all the drivel, to get the meat.

Hey all: I tried to follow this gatherings post. Ain't been easy BUT I am interested. I'm on the mend (knee surgery)but am getting closer to climbing. May actually try this weekend. If all goes well over the next few weeks then I am in. I've talked to a few of you in the past and hope to meet everyone. The way I figure: climbing Birdsboro, camping at Mitchals (thanks for the spots) and Annie is cooking eveyone bacon & eggs in the morning. I will drive, small car seats 4, coming from Balto, others welcome to ride. Last time I tried to meet up with you Pennsyvanians it rain like hell. So let's hope for good weather. Nov can be a little iffy. Later Charlie PS I can smell Annies bacon already:-)

I emaied Rob Holtzman to invite him to the gathering and this is what he said: Thanks fornthe invite. It may interest you to know there is an access agreement with the borough at birdsboro that there is not supposed to be any publicized info reguarding bordsboro. They allow climbing there due to this agreement so posting directions or inviting large crouds is probably not a good idea. I think its great to have a get together but the bird is supposed to be kept a low key area. Maybe you could just have people come who already know about the spot. If you need to reply to this post, reply to squirt515@hotmail.com If you have any questions about the access issues there you can reach me at this adress in a week and a half. You may be able to get away with having it there if you keep the numbers low. If not there are a lot of great spots that have better access... Hmmm....guys. Mitchal, Nate any confirmation of this? Agree/Disagree?

Well that kinda sucks. I have tried getting info on the quarry from,The access fund,Birdboro City Hall,The "Elusive" Birdsboro Climbing Commitee, Bob Perna(Set most of the routes there) and have gotten ZILCH. So who is this Rob Holtzman anyhow? And where is he getting his info? And why is this restriction NOT posted on any of the many signs there? In the 2 years that I have been STEADY climbing there,I have never seen more than a dozen people at a time there, perhaps, that is why.I may have to delete my postings in "Routes" and keep the crag a secret(yeah right!) Anyhow,I am there for the gathering,be there anyone else or not. I am also going to send Mr. Holtzman a note to find out the details. This thing isn't dead yet. And...On the Main page for the gathering,it says that my living room is available to crash in,It is the woods behind my house that is open for tents,as long as nobody gets out of hand. Keep your ears out on this one,and keep the fingers crossed. If anyone hears anything, either PM me or post it here. Thank you all. Climb Happy Mitch

hahahahaha....as far as i know...there are fisherman, bikers, hikers, runners, walkers, dog ppl, paintball hunters....and climbers, yeah you always can jump on a route....but those that are coming to this event either would have found it eventually or are coming to climb for a weekend with their friends who LIVE HERE and CLIMB THERE...for gawds sakes...it is a friggin public park...dah...ppl love the fact that it isn't busy there...and i doubt the first weekend in november on a shade wall anyone's gonna be screaming shitzz about it!! RANDY I THINK YOU DO TOO MUCH WRITING TO PPL....HEAR????? anyhow...the party is still at birdsboro...see you all there and you will see the signs too!! ps...this is an rc.com event...not a local yokal, randers [ This Message was edited by: climbinganne on 2002-09-08 10:41 ]

well lets just keep in mind to leave nothing more then footprints and careful consideration that we're representing the climbing community...am i going to let one unconfirmed warning stop me or us? No way, just thought it was appropiate to bring to everyones attention so we can be prepared to represent Rc.com and the climbing community in a reasonable fashion. It would be horrible for us to lose access to this place. So lets go have fun, and not stir up any feathers. God bless randy

Hi, Way to piss off Anne Randy! I am going to stop in at Birdsboro Town Hall and talk to Judge Smiley about the rules and regsulations at the quarry.I am not going to mention this little idea, just maybe throw the idea of something along these lines out on the table, and seee how she reacts. While she doesn't run the town, she has influence on how the area is used as it is part of the police practice range. She is a very reasonable woman,so we'll see what happens. I have been informed that Rob Holtzman is a reliable source of beta on ANY rock in Pa., so what he says is more than likely correct. Let's all see how this all pans out,not being an organized thing and all. I'll keep you all posted. Climb Happy(and quietly) Mitch

what is the settting of birdsboro, is it in town, that it can be patrolled easily? Or fairly remote? Do lots of people use it? Would 15 or so cars set off some alarms at the Hay Creek Park parking lot? Is the area visible to residents?

My God, you people are driving me crazy. I don't know what all of this talk is about limited access to the old quary, but as long as I have been there, there has never been any posted rules of the number of people permited to use the grounds. I say full steam ahead with the plans, and lets have a good time. But just remember, as long as we behave and leave only footprints, Birdsboro township should have no problem or knowledge of us being there. -Nate-

Hey, The 222/422 beltway is definately the way to go.Do not however go 176 to get to Birdsboro.Stay on 422 east until you get to 82 south, this is the road into Birdsboro, and the very one leading to the quarry.Take it accross the bridge into town, you will pass,as follows:Turkey Hill(gatorade&food),large foundry building(Birdsboro corp.)Town..Vinnies pizza on left,Dante's Depot,on right,Feed mill on left, baseball feild(little league), then the park will be on right(parking lot),bridge out sign(you're almost there),then a gate accross the road, follow the closed road, over two bridges, right at gravel road,up past old quarry building, left into TOP part of quarry. The LOWER part of the quarry isOUT OF BOUNDS and will result in arrest and confiscation of gear. Hope to see you all there. Climb Happy Mitch

UMMMMM Anne, I have been down that road like 4,974,815,664,843,124 times, and I KNOW that AFTER passing the gate where the road closed begins,it is TWObridges. I'll run down there tomorrow after I get out of Town Hall and recheck. Any bets on this one Anne?I feel pretty confident of my memory, adled as my mind is. Luvya Climb Happy Mitch

Hi All, I was at the quarry today, having crossed TWO bridges, after the gate.Bridges being the strucure spanning the creek, having grating and side rails. This does not count the little pipes under the roadway. No Matter. Anyhow,to the REAL reason I am posting. I was at Town Hall this afternoon talking with the local"powers to be" in regards to the rules and regulations pertaining to the use of the "old quarry".The lower section is the town water supply, and as such is OFF LIMITS ,anyone caught in there will be,arrested, fined, and, all gear will be confiscated, and NOT returned. The upper section is the area used for climbing, allowed as a courtesy by the township(not a town park). There is no prohibition on organized gatherings(within reason) and beta on the area MAY be published, posted, passed among climbers and non-climbers. I was informed that rowdy, raucous, and otherwise unsavory,or dangerous behavior will not be tolerated. No thermo-nuclear detonations are allowed either. I have given my word that this will be a civil gathering and vouched for the conduct and character of those who will be attending,as well as for that of the general membership of the climbing community. They will be watching us when we are there and this will reflect on the access to the quarry,as well as their attitude in regards to future events there. It will also show what kind of folks are the "Climbing Community" WE ARE ON!!!!!! Climb Happy Mitch p.s. Drink Grease Anne (he he)

the best way to find the climbing area is to simply look for the old barn...before u get there you will go over a grate bridge and there will be a hard left on the abandoned road. Make a right here and follow the trail up around the far side of the barn and hug the trail along the hill. DO NOT GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL (this is the off limits area). Sorry if any of this was a repost. Oh, and you can count on me being there after my classes.

Mitch: Thanks for being our delegate to the town of Birdsboro. For all of you who have not climbed here, please do not let the banter (I mean that kindly) between Anne and Mitch lead you to believe this is a tough place to find. It is however, a good walk from the parking area to the climb. Slightly less than a mile actually. Are we going to meet somewhere Fri. night? Chris

Hi All!! I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Michael and I live in Glen Rock, PA. I've been climbing on and off for about five years and have recently gotten back into the sport in a big way! I have most of my own gear and do mostly top-rope stuff right now. I led a couple easy routes a couple years ago but right now am trying to get my lazy butt back in shape! I rsvp'ed for the Birdsboro trip and am looking forward to meeting everyone! I climb mostly at Rock State Park and Woodstock Rocks in MD, but will be checking out Chickies in the near future. Nice to meet everyone and, I gotta say, this web page rocks! Oh yeah, I'm married with two weimaraners and twin daughters on the way in January!! Cya all later! Michael [ This Message was edited by: mprediger on 2002-09-12 07:46 ]

I know it's early yet, but are most people planning to park their butts in the public campground? It would be cool if we were all in a similar area there....perhaps we should add that category to the front page, that is, where people think they'll be staying? Just a thought...I'm tired...I gotta lie down...

Hey Climberboy: I'll ride with ya. Hopefully I can climb as well. I can drive and have room for 3 maybe 4 (Toyota Echo). The van died at the end of summer (sniff, sniff). I'm looking for a new van(full size) so maybe I'll find one by then. My knee is on the mend. Been 3 months since I've climbed. I can ride(road only) my bike for 30 miles. Progress, slow progress. Just dug out my handy dandy hand warmer.I was out at the quarry today and was remembering how the rock is in Feb.If you have a warmer, bring it!The sun is on the rock during the day, making it warmer than the ambient air temp.Actually,it isn't really that bad.Have gloves along for the time between climbs. yeah...the morning for me will be spotted out what i wanna eventually climb....like at the Governor Stables Comp....if I survived that night with a make-shift tent (a tarp with a rope going from one volleyball net support to the other about 3 inches off my nose) I'm convinced that nothing can be that bad! Did you actually need em yesterday though?

i just got back from a days worth of climbing at birdsboro...oh, it was awesome. That Big Wall is freakin amazing! How come there is no beta listed on that wall. I can't wait to watch some of you tackle that beast. Is that were the 13 was put up? And Orange Sunshine was a great climb! I can't wait for the gathering!

oh i'm not getting into THAT discussion!!! However, I didn't realize that some of the directions Mitch gave were walking as well....so I was a bit confused, but once I found the rock in all made sense. And it really easy to find, so don't worry everyone!

Been away for a little while and not reading the forums enough, I totally missed this! I want to come along if there is still space (are there even space considerations?). If I can get one or two friends to come along we could probably camp somewhere (was there French State Park you mentioned? what is that like?). Sounds like a great place to go! Will be coming from Pittsburgh if anyone from that area needs a ride. Cheers! Irina

On the subject of fires,as of now, there is an open burning ban in Berks County. Most other Pa. counties are the same status. With more rain, this will be lifted.Hopefully it will come soon.I am a member of the local fire co. and will ask as to what the status is.I will keep you all informed. Just don't pray for rain on that weekend! Climb Happy Mitch

Hey Anne, How was Chickies today? I was thinking of heading out there today, but with the last 2 days of rain I thought it would be fairly wet and not worth the 90 minute drive. Maybe next time I just shouldn't think dj

hey...you should have dj, we first toped two ropes on the main wall...we hit a couple wet spots going up the middle, hehe...but it made it that much more interesting...after 1 o'clock we headed over to solution area and hung more 3 ropes and the rock was as dry as chickies ever feels..it was perfect!!! we had a perfect climbimg weather, cool light breezy day along the river...a lot of yellow jackets thanks to my daughter and her peanut butter and jelly fest... hey we are climbing tomorrow in that vicinity...wanna join us????

Hi All, Why not discuss all those subjects, and one more.Where in the hell are all the campers at my place gonna park?My driveway is short and narrow, and I have a neighbor that uses it as well,so it can't be blocked. Friday night meeting spot could be the local tavern,I don't drink, but I would hangout and wait for those to show on Fri,if I knew who to look for. Dinner at the local diner. Directions to my place are available by personal request. Oh, and fires are looking likely,it's raining here again, and all weekend, off and on. More to come.... Climb Happy Mitch

From the food thread: Is there a big chain restaurant which everyone can obviously find right off of 422 somewhere with plenty of parking? That to me would be the ideal meeting AND eating place. PLEASE REPLY TO THIS IN THE FOOD THREAD in regards to finding a place to eat.

As for Saturday. It seems to make the most sense to meet in the Hay Creek Parking lot. Anne says she'll have it well marked back to the rock. (it's easy to find and but nessary to mark, some is off limits.) If you get there around 9ish (we haven't determined a concrete starting time yet!) I'm sure there will be lots of others getting unpacked and ready to hike in.

i was just throwing the possibility out there. But i'll see what they say! especially wildware, cuz they're a PA based store and what the heck is our gathering--PA BASED! But we love the out-of-staters!

wowowowooaa I was just wondering if we were gonna discuss a time for everyone to show up. I wasn't sure if we're planning to get an early start at 8:30 or take our time and shoot for 10:30-11ish... especially for the out-of-towners, i wouldn't want to get there at 8:30 and not see a sole for 2 hrs.

Anne is right. If there are signs, then people can get themselves to the crags. If we start throwing meeting times out for Sat., we will have a flurry of responses from everyone who feels that the time is too early and those who feel it is too late. There are some things we can do as a group of many, many people and some things we will have to do as pockets of people. Many people are coming in at different times anyway. We still need to figure out where we are meeting Friday night. Obviously somewhere where we can drink and somewhere those <21 can be as well. Have we hammered that down?

Ok, I'm back. Sorry I've been gone so long. I have an update for anyone wishing to stay at my place, my sister-in-law is moving into my house this week, so I am now only able to provide a foam mattress and floor space to anyone who wishes to use it. First come first serve, and anne is already at the top of the list. As for food, Old country buffet is the best choice, for price and avalability that is, although there is no no acohol served there, but everyone is sure to get what they want. And you pay before you eat, I personally like this feature, because I hate fighting over who owes what when the bill arives at the table. Well, whaterev you people decide, I will just go with the flow. Ok, that is all I have to add for now. Later days -Nate-

on the subject of weather: I have an email into Eric Horst (who for those of you who don't know, is also a meteorologist at Millesville U.) I also sent out a invite to him. Maybe he can show us all how to climb that wicked .13 he set on the big wall.

eric said that from the long term view (still 17 days away) the turbulent weather pattern leaves us with nothing more than a big ?? (question) mark. However, he did say (for all you weather guys out there, myself included.) that there will be a nasty trough in the jet stream for the next 2 weeks which will give us below normal temps...hopefully that will be up and out of here by our weekend!!!

Hi, Eric,I will send those out to you.Ah,it's easy.422 w to 82 s into Birdsboro.Follow that road till it ends in a "bridge out " sign. That is the closed off road that leads into the quarry. Next issue..... Parking for those camping at my place. Many will have to park somewhere else and carpool here.I live on a tiny road, with a tinier driveway. We'll work on this. Mitch

its funny how everyone came and said "COUNT ME IN!" and then vanished from the ongoing discussion. Of course, if they all would be as concerned as me, we would have drove everyone crazy a long time ago, but they're so many count-me-in-yet-haven't-said-a-word-since people!!!

You can count me in. I just though thtat I would say that even though I have allready said it like 6 times. I still hope it is cold. If it gets to cold I might sneak over to a relatives house 7 minutes away and sleep in the heated basement with warm water. But too cold is like super cold.

Yes, in response to climbinganne's post about her cursing problem, she meets rondij for the first time and on his second climb proceeds to tell him what to do with his foot!!! She can not climb with him at B-boro. Or he may stick his foot up her !#*?&*!

Don't Go! Don't do it! This event jeopardizes access to Birdsboro climbing. First of all, when access was negotiated with the town of Birdsboro, they were very concerned about the amount of climber traffic. Climbers were counted over the course of several weekends to allay their fears. On a weekend day it is rare to see more than a few climbers at the cliffs. Second, I believe that part of the access agreement stated that the area could not be written about, or advertised to other climbers. This event and the information about Birdsboro on this site surely violate that agreement and the trust climbers have enjoyed with the town of Birdsboro. And don't think getting waivers will save the area. If ya'll showed up at town hall en-masse to get waivers they would be very alarmed. I have been climbing at b-boro for over 5 years and no one has ever asked me for my waiver. Low profile is best. It is just not cool for climbers to do something that jeopardizes access for all. Please boycott this as an event and save one of Pennsylvanias few climbing areas. Removing Birdsboro route descriptions from the website would also help. If you want to check out B-boro individually, you are welcome, and would likely find B-boro veterens happy to point out the routes and their ratings.

see that is how much you know....or DON'T KNOW...they stopped waivers long ago...and there is NO LONGER an agrreement about non publishing of route info, directions etc...you think we didnt check all of this out??? nancy..this was wrong of you...if you really think this is going to hurt anything you should have talked to us in private, you want to sabotage this gathering...good luck...these members are fine ppl...more than i can say for you...we will have a nice talk next time i see you. FYI, nancy..you do not have any more right to those rocks than anyone on this site...and the MAIN difference between us and you is the fact that we learned to share in kindergarden... girl you are welcome to join this happy event...but show up with a smile on your face and act nice...or these fine ppl will know your true intentions...to keep this crag to your greedy little self. I re-read your post...the key word you use is "BELIEVE" next time get your facts straight...many of us have worked long and hard on this gathering and "KNOW" the facts. and it seems to me by your post that when waivers were needed to climb, you my dear did not follow the set rules...that shows a lot about your character...so don't come on here and guilt trip any of these ppl...you have shown absolutely no character...you can't even give your name on your profile...shows how much we should trust your word... Birdsboro is NOT open to the PUBLIC. Access to this area is SENSITIVE. A huge gathering can shut the place down for good. The place isn't that big. It only has 2 dozen routes. Top-Roping is discouraged. (unless someone rope-guns it to the anchors). Don't ruin it for everybody.

replying to Anne's rant: you should read my message more carefully. For one, I didn't say anyone isn't welcome to enjoy the rocks. Just don't show up en masse with a big group. Also, I never said I didn't have a waiver (I do). Just don't overwhelm the town with large numbers of people asking for waivers. And who did you check out access issues with? Sounds to me like you would ruin access for everyone just as long as you can have your little party.

well maybe you and your friend should get on the same PAGE... YOUR POSTS CONTRADICT EACH OTHER... and the "real" members of this site CAN READ...and they will be able to distinguish between fact and bullshit... had you brought this to one of us in private and shown respect...i would have been happy to tell you anything...but since you decided to cause trouble...i owe you an explaination of NOTHING!!! Local climbers...regulars of B-boro, ppl that live there and climb there are going to enjoy a weekend with their guests...we are not like you...so saying this, we hope you join us as well. once again...in case you missed it the first and second time... WE DID OUR HOMEWORK...WE WENT TO TOWN HALL you are the only one making this gathering uncool....shame on you!!!!

Njo : maybe you should be the one reading more carefully... Annes post states that they have not done the waiver thing for a long time.. yet you still feel that we are gonna arrive en masse and ask for waivers. What I suggest you do in read the thread and you will see that the access issues have already been discussed and dealt with. so spend some time doing your homework before you accuse us of not doing ours. ca cera cera *EDIT: njo to save you some time I looked back through the thread access issues are dealt on page 8 and 10 of the thread! read and if you have any other questions then you can ask [ This Message was edited by: chakan on 2002-10-24 06:17 ]

it looks at though the weather for the gathering should be pleasant. Somehow, everything (the hurricane in TX, alberta clippers, lake effect moisture, etc.) all look like they're calming down after wednesday and we'll have a nice, cool (low 50s) weekend! Sounds great!!!

Spelling means nothing when it comes to climbing. Spelling only means something when you get 5% of a fill in the blank test because of your spelling and handwriting. It also means something when a girl asks you for your number then cant read it so you could not hang out Thursday. Other then that spelling is over rated and you need to read the disclaimer in my profile.

Why would you fine people pick Birdsboro (in November) to have your gathering? From what I've read, you're planning to set siege on this, to this point, discreet climbing area with a battalion of novice climbers. Why B'boro? There are maybe 25 routes here, and most are 5.10 and up. Why not go to the Red, the New or the Gunks? Access issues are not as sensitive, lodging, dining and partying are more accessible and there are tons of routes of all grades. The organizers of this event, if familiar with the brief history of the area, are acting irresponsibly. This event may be the kick-ass party of the year for you but the repercussions will be felt by those of us who follow the established ethic. Before you start attacking my character because I disagree with what you're doing, you should know that I was involved in the initial meetings with the borough. This is exactly what they were afraid of and this is why we came up with the waivers, to keep tab of how many climbers are using this area, which is on the site of the borough water supply. So, have fun, be selfish but be safe. One final comment; the rock at Birdsboro is not granite, it's a granitic diabase. [ This Message was edited by: kayaker on 2002-10-28 06:47 ]

Hi All, Denny, for the record: I have two members of the original group involved in this(albeit, against),as well as,the"PAC"," Access Fund",and,Town hall in Birdsboro. The people coming to this event neither are coming to a "KICK ASS PARTY" or a seige of the quarry. We are just a bunch of ethical, safety minded, climbers, coming together in the hopes of meeting and climbing with other members of this site. I have been to town hall on two occasions and am going there yet againg to outline and gain "WRITTEN" permission. The VERY LAST thing I want to do is to harm relations between climbers there and town hall, hence all the work and communication going on.Access to the quarry is in my best PERSONAL interest,as it is my "home" crag. If you have such concern over what goes on there, tell me one thing, Why have I,in the years I've climbed there, never found a contact name,or number,to raise questions on something like this? The very lack of this info is the root of all the dissention going on over the gathering. I have asked Ted and Jeff about this, what is your answer? Oh, your character will not be questioned,or berated,I'm sure you are above reproach, and that your concerns are well intentioned.Everyone applauds that. I personally invite you there and hope you came and climb and see what we are all about. I will also keep you informed on a new "committee" being formed and ask your help in the matter. Hope to see you there. Climb Happy Mitch P.S. I will correct the rock type, thanks for the beta. Editted to reflect possitions against gathering, by former committee members. i'm not an expert geologist, but Gov. Dick and Governor Stables, (and St. Peters, and Haycock, and lots of Rock at French Creek) are Diabase, and that rock doesn't resemble Birdsboro at all. But I believe that could be triassic diabase versus granitic diabase, i guess that makes all the difference?!

Hi, I'm Bobbie I am one of the members of the first mission to "The Bird". Many a battle had to be fought, both physically and legally, to establish this as a legit climbing site. This is a sensitive area and the #1 rule has always been discretion. Being discreet assures us of access. We all know what happened at Safe Harbor due to commercialization of the area. It is a fact that the more popular a place becomes, the more shutdowns occur. We have few such legal places to play these days, we want all to enjoy in a quiet manner. We have already lost the "Sunny Side" to the renewal of quarrying. Lets take care of what we have left. As for toproping off of anything other than set anchors, you're at your own risk! As for dissin' my friends, ClimbingAnne, get to know them before you accuse them of being selfish and greedy. With respect, B

i have always felt assured that the organizers had planned our gathering responsibly. but nevertheless, some concerns have been raised. i still plan to attend, but i would just like to hear one final verdict . . . are relations between the climbing community & authorities amicable and do both parties have a complete understanding of the gathering. is the crag large enough for the number of climbers planning to go? i'm looking forward to the gathering, but don't want my actions to have any ill effects. perhaps obtaining a final head count of those still intending to attend will help. the number of ppl that expressed an interest in the early planning stages has since dwindled. patrick

Well, I gotta throw in my two cents about access. After climbing at birdsboro a number of years, I know the area’s history and realize how sensitive access to this area is. I appreciate mitchal’s efforts in contacting town hall. His past post is worth repeating: … in regards to the rules and regulations pertaining to the use of the "old quarry". The lower section is the town water supply ,and as such is OFF LIMITS,anyone caught in there will be arrested, fined, and, all gear will be confiscated, and NOT returned. The upper section is the area used for climbing, allowed as a courtesy by the township (not a town park). There is no prohibition on organized gatherings(within reason) and beta on the area MAY be published, posted, passed among climbers and non-climbers. I was informed that rowdy ,raucous, and otherwise unsavory, or dangerous behavior will not be tolerated.... Please note that the area is *not* a park, climbing is allowed as a *courtesy*, and gatherings should be *“within reason”*. So come only if you must, and watch out for each other. A final word- newbies will not find the bird a good place to climb. Of the 25 or so bolted routes, there is only one 5.6 and 5.7, and these are very short slab routes. Other than two 5.8’s, most everything else is .10 and above. The climbing is hard because of the nature of the quarried rock, so setting top ropes between the bolts won’t make it much easier. Don’t make a long drive to wait for two short climbs. BTW, I also found some of climbingannes responses to be very rude. I think an apology is in order. Climb safe, -Pat Bost

Somethings have come to my attention tonight that i was unaware of. I was given half information on what was going on between the township, access fund and the locals feelings'. i think i may have most of the information tonite. However i feel responsible for this, being one of the organizers and not knowing all of the information, and i apologize to everyone. Mitch did not get the permission slip to be able to hold the gathering and this slip, though probably not needed, would ensure peace between the locals and the access fund. I do not feel comfotable attending what is now being called a "non rc.com event". I am sorry and i am not saying anyone else should not attend, what i have been told by my co-organizers is this is NOT an rc.com event. Please leave this site out of the equation...damn, i hate that fact that this happened four days before this event was supposed to take place...had i had the right information prior to this, other plans could have been arranged...again my sincerest apologies. well folks, i just got off the phone with oozingpustule and he has graciously invited all of us to his place, "Nelson Rocks Preserve" in West Viginia...there we don't need to dance with the access fund nor do we need to share "our rock" with the locals. if you need directions and or any info...you know where to reach me... ***when life gives you lemons...MAKE LEMONADE!! OFFICIAL STATEMENT: My fellow RC.com climbers: It is my unfortunate responsibility to inform you that the gathering will not occur as originally scheduled on Friday, Nov 1st to Sunday, Nov, 3rd. Climb on—responsively—my fellow climbers, Randy [ This Message was edited by: rwaltermyer on 2002-10-28 20:01 ]

Now for my statement on this unfortunate turn of events. I want to firstly thank Anne and Randy for all the hard work they put in on this gathering.Their efforts were Hurculean in scope and determination.I am proud that I was included in their plan and wish to appologize for not being able to do more in less time. As you can see in the sequence of posts, every effort was made to make the locals and town hall aware of the event and to extend every courtesy to them both. The concerns of the locals were valid,if not overreacted to.Having recieved a letter forwarded from Randy, from Rob Holtzman,I was told of access concerns and contacted town hall with these questions and was assured all would be fine.I should have expanded my scope and sought harder for old committtee members, but, thought it unneeded.

Having contacted the "Access Fund" before and been told they had no records of the (former) committee,or any agreement,we continued planning. Recently we were deluged with nasty emails and threats of access closure, and then contacted the PAC for assistance in assuring permission. This past friday I was advised that the Access Fund recomended a WRITTEN permission to gather from town hall.I returned and detailed all that was happening.Even though the sentiment was that they(town officials) could not understand the need,They put the matter in front of the borough manager. He recomended a review by the town solicitor, and I was told that no timeframe for approval could be garunteed. At this time I recomended that Randy make a decision on cancelling and told him I was for cancellation. He prudently did so.We felt it unfair to have anyone hang in limbo when a timely answer could not be garrunteed.

Having done all this,to the point of personal difficulties in freindships,we felt we had done a good job in planning and attempting to gain access. We are now in the proccess of forming a new and CONTACTABLE committee to deal with issues relating to,and affecting, climbing at the quarry. I personally wish to appologize for not being nore forthright with info on pending troubles.I felt it best to work on the side and let only the others directly involved in on things.I held back some from even those people,in concern for the strain they were already under. A new and "Officialy Approved" gathering will be coming in the spring. The planning will be done first, and then posted. I again appologize for any lack on my part and want to credit the other planners and those who were going to attend for their efforts. Thanks for the dream Mitch

for some wierd reason...after reading your post Mitchal...I get a sense of satification, a sense of accomplishment. Unfortunately it came at an expense, but the spring gathering will batch that up!! Gosh we may need to plan an indoor gathering just so we can meet each other now!
