What do you say to a guy who is new to climbing, real nice, but his climbing shoes stink like SHIT! I mean you can smell them when he is belaying and you are 40 ft up! It's bad, his regular partner (a guy)doesn't seem to care, but us women have taken notice! Don't want to hurt his feelings, but the smell stays with me long after I leave the gym. He wants to climb outside w/ me and my partner outside this summer. I can't imagine how bad it will be when he really starts to sweat! Any suggestions? Would it be better coming from a guy? Or from one of us girls? Thanks!

I think you should get your male friend to tell him about that problem. Just in case if he is not mature enough to take it well from a female.

...and there's nothin' like the smell of a mountain cabin (built for 4, housing 6) after 3 nights of failed summit attempts and filled with the harsh odour of 12 ice boot inners all in various states of freeze-thaw-wet-dry cycles.... not to mention the accompanying putrid socks that, when a true climber changes them, are both swapped to the other foot and subsequently turned inside out, before moving on to the next fresh pair...

Fuck you too! You apparently can read! I am not just a gym climber and stinking is not some rite of passages. It just shows you are a slob and have nothing or no one to stay clean for! As far as stinking because you are on a wall or mountain and smelling just because you have a phobia to soap & water, big difference there you dirt bag! So keep your stinkin' feet and ASS in BC

Unles you are really fond of the smell of the fungus amungus, try pouring tea tree oil into the shoe. That stuff will kill anything and covers up a lot of unwashed.

Ga4 christ sake if you are afraid of getting a dickname you are in the wrong place. Hanging around the scummunity campground is assing to get some culture put in ya. I know very few women who can't wait to wash their feet after climbing and even fewer men who don't have a sense of pride about the state of their shoes. Even as far as it creating a peculiar social strata, as pointed out above. Though I'm sure that you conceive his infraction as a great forbearance against your personal code of hygiene, as close as I can tell he is a man and the only thing that changes our behavior is the thing between your legs and the nagging lips that make us listen to it. Outside of that fact we have no adversion to cleanliness. If you gave any attention to the climbing mentioned it requires enough energy to make more than a meal and rest a waste of time and resources. Returning to your gym example, and I mean this as if it was said outside of this place, you might be acting like a bit of a princess and need to accept that not everyone will attempt to maintain on your level. The best you can hope for is that he will meet you half way. If you even considered climbing with him instead of seeking to make him viewed in a negative light by those you considered would care about such a trifle.

You guys are something else. I don't think it was out of line to ask what to say to someone about their feet. I am not the only one with a problem with it. I am the one who has been helping him out, everyone else exits for fresher air! I am not a princess, I have no issues with getting down in the mud snd sweating on a wall. Just think people men included can wash with soap & water on a regular basis.

Climbing shoes can be washed. I washed both my pairs recently -- synthetic 5-10s and leather Boreals and both came out of the wash with stickier rubber and less stench. I soaked them first. Washed with regular detergent on a normal warm water cycle and put them in with an old towel to cut down on the bumping around. I let them air dry for a week (I did it over the Christmas Holidays when I was visiting my folks and couldn't climb for a week anyway). I think if I knew a climber whose feet reeked that bad I might talk about washing my shoes within ear shot of them. If they don't get the hint I might say something more direct. BO/hygene is a touchy subject though!

Thanks, I wash mine and they are sticker and last longer. If I say something to him, hopefully he won't take it as a knock. Apparently IT IS a touchy subject, especially to those who don't know what soap & water look like. My how offended they get when body oder is mention. Nevermind how offensive they are to those around them.

ya know, im really surprised ive never seen any of you stinky ass feet mf'ers use the little stuffed feet on a string things. i have a pair and they work great. they are stuffed full of cedar shavings, ya stuff em in your shoes when you arent using them, and they stay dry and smell like a gerbil cage instead of running off on their own when you arent looking. just watch your back if you climb with a gay partner.
