I hear alot of people talking about liting up a cigar at the end of a climb or smokin a camel right before. Personally I cant stand any smoke or tobacco and hate to be around people that do smoke. But what im askin today is. What do you do with your ciggarete butts. You dont throw them on the ground or put it out on the rock do you? Im just wanderin. also, what do you think about finding cigarettes in cracks and beer bottles on the ground. Ill tell you what I think...

Ugh... at the place I usually climb everything is covered in broken glass. It's really gross and I've seen several people get chunks of glass in their hands while they are climbing (myself included). Not fun. I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. It makes my throat swell up. So, no one smokes around me unless they wanna get spazzed at.

We always take a coffeee can out to the climbs so we have a place to throw cigarrette butts, food wrappers, etc. I hate to see that kind of stuff laying around at the bottom of the crags. AW

Well when I used to smoke and I was outdoors I would carry the butts out and get rid of them properly. If I didn't have a bag or something I'd strip out the leftover tabbaco (it will Biodegrate) and carry out the filter and paper.

at the place i go its covered in broken glass because people party at the top and its really gross...i have been cut a few times and it sucks because when you climb you have to really look before you put your hand somewhere it sucks a lot. i hate it when people smoke around me...but they should have enough respect to at least not leave their cigarett buts aroung.

all i need to take to the crags is a bag of chronic in the pocket with a nice apple to enjoy it. then either eat the apple or break it on the ground it does biodegrate. so if your going to smoke why not this kind?

I cant stand when people leave all the glass I had to retire my last crash pad cause of all the cuts in the bottom. I do tke one of the biohazard tashbags up with me and bring home all I can. The glass wont cut through those and the butts cant stink up my car.

dude smoke is the worst thing in the world...i cant stand it when my step dad lights up a cigerrete in the car and the opens the window an inch like its going to help any. i have asked him to stop smoking in the car before and he freaked out..its the worst when i wake up in the middle of the night not being able to breath because of the smoke. its really gross. but yeah about the topic: every time we go climbing we pick up broken bottles and put them in a big pile then at the end of the day we take em home and throw them out.i hate getting glass stuck in me hands it sucks! the place i go to in covered in butts.. people um..live on the top and get high and drunk all the time. then they come talk to us and stuff..its weird

First Comment: "Leave No Trace" Second Comment: It boggles the mind that athletes participating in a sport that requires such discipline and such a high fitness level would smoke. No lectures here, but, SMOKING WILL KILL YOU IN SEVERAL UNPLEASANT WAYS!! Of course falling from several hundred feet off the ground can't be a really pleasant way to die. Anyway, I assume that most people who climb have some desire to enjoy nature unmolested. Finding bottles, cans, and butts (the tobacco-filled kind) at your climbing area has to take away from the enjoyment of the climb. Granted, most climbing spots are fairly crowded now, but come on. Pack it out! Jim [ This Message was edited by: jaydoc on 2001-12-16 20:50 ]

I smoked for thirteen long years until I started rock climbing: within a month of starting, I quite cold turkey and haven't had one in over five years. I don't miss it at all but I do remember being very concietious about leaving butts behind. I used to keep my cigs in an antique cigarette tin (how they used to sell them) and I'd pack out the old butts in the tin. Anyway, I felt like a real hypocrite the first time I went outdoor climbing & I had to take a break for a smoke; hear I was in the most incredible area I'd ever imagined and I was puffing away on a cigarette. For any younger climbers reading this post, do yourselves a favour and don't bother starting, it's not worth the hassle of being addicted to a substance that can control you to such a degree...

First time I went to Shelf Road I was amazed at the climbing and amazed at how clean the area was. The only litter I found were cigarette butts. Enough said.

My friend smokes at the crag ... smoke blows away, he climbs like a hell fiend - best belay I ever had, always encouraging. Has a little pouch with a cigarette roller and tobbacco to save cash, and a little tin for the butts. Just be responsible and be aware of those around you.

Man, some of you must really have a problem functioning in real society. It's one thing if you don't smoke, or even don't like smoke, but smokers don't need to hear yet another person whine about how they don't like it. I don't like how some people stink after they climb, but I don't whine. Smoking is your choice. Yes, it's bad for you, but so what. Your choice. I put people that whine about smoke in the same category as people that walk up to you and tell you to join their religion -- I hate those people. If you smoke, have the decency to bring your butts out of the crag with you -- it's not hard. If you don't, don't whine like a sissy and give me a holier than thou attitude.

Seems to me there is nothing worse than going to the great outdoors and finding human presence left behind....beer bottles, butts, trash, whatever!!!!! And for those of you who are advocating smoking something else you may be doing even more harm by giving gracious land owners good reasons to close down climbing areas, I certainly would not want people smoking weed on my property! True climbers should be so respectful that they would not even think of jeopardizing a climbing area whether by leaving trash or going illegal drugs while climbing. Is there not enough in climbing that makes you need something more? If so maybe it's time you though of a different sport, cause I'll be mad as hell if a climbing area is closed because of disrespectful so called climbers! respectfully submitted woodsE

i do smoke and my friends and i pack out what we bring in right down to the butts, infact one of my packs has a mesh pouch we use like a garbage. also i do understand many people hate smoke thats why i walk away from everyone so it doesnt bother them, and if someone is smoking too close to you and its bothering you just ask them nicely i doubt they will have a problem with moving.

I am a smoker and a FIRM believer in packing out what you pack in. I also think that alot of the garbage is not always the product of people in the climbing community. I think that most of us are digusted by litter bugs especially in our forests and crags. But you people that want to riducule people for smoking cigs need to relax. That was real nice Pianomahn... Smoking sucks. Go away cancer fiends. I am an adult and yes me and most other smoker's know it isn't the best choice for our health and yes i would like to quit and will someday...however it's my CHOICE. So all you people criticizing smokers back off. Maybe each one of you pink lungs have a crutch that could be easily riduculed too. Complain about litter, help pick it up but get down off your throne and leave us smokers alone. that's all...and boy could i use a smoke.

I can think of no less appealing thing on a BIGWALL in YOSEMITE than to find Cigarette Butts stuffed in the cracks. Now, Unlike some of the posting members regarding this issue, Graniteboy has a SOLUTION. This WHOLE ISSUE would END if we could get the U.S. Legislators to QUIT SUBSIDIZING the TOBACCO INDUSTRY. We give these corporate parasites tens of millions of your and my TAX DOLLARS each year so that consumers can afford their "products". If this were actually a free market economy (which large corporations are always arguing for, except when they're BUYING CONGRESSMEN to get them PORK BARREL SUBSIDIES) the Tobacco industry in America would FAIL, and we wouldn't be having this discussion. So WATCH the VOTING RECORD of your congress representative, and boot them outta office if they vote for TOBACCO SUBSIDIES. The fact that this subsidy continues in the US makes me wanna

I wonder what percentage of america actually does smoke. At least 50% wouldn't you say? I wish there were more. The only thing is, like marajuana, tabaco products would be smuggled into the country. And there would be almost zero control over it. But hey, even then people would be afraid to smoke in public. Everybody vote for me, im running for president, my campaign slogan will be, "Kick tobacco companies' butts outta our country!" Think it'll Catch?

This Post is for Granite Boy. So you really think that the Gov't subsidizes the Tobacco industry??? Guess what....they don't, they tax the heck out of it, cigarettes would only be around a dollar a pack, but the gov't throws a 2 dollar tax on each pack. They also are the ones that opened a huge lawsuit against the Tobacco companies, and did that break them? I think not, they make most of their money overseas. And addressing another issue, I can't believe people smoke up before they climb, personally there is no way that after I smoked I would do anything but stare at the rock. Then I would be to tired to do anything else. But that is coming from someone who doesn't smoke anything, and is allergic to most of the smoke that comes from burning objects. The places I climb, are well taken care of, you have to hike quite a while to get to most of them, the locals are to lazy to do it, but I take a trashbag anyway, because sometimes some stuff will washes up on the banks of the river.

I climb at the same place as vaness. It's disusting to see all the crap that people leave all over the place. It's in the middle of a city and yuo would expect some garbage but not as much as at this place. One time these three freaky guys were smoking pot at the top of the crag at they asked be and my friend if were had ties with the local police department. it was weird.

I agree with hating trash at the sites I climb at. With help from the access fund, a group of us, including myself, clean a local agree, Capen Park, every so often so trash does not pile up. I do not smoke and do not drink while I climb but I do not have anything against people who do. I only ask that you keep the "Leave no trace" concept in mind and carry out what you bring in

HEY ....... I agree take it in, pack it out .. the only trouble is a lot of people, including climbers don't. Why not do like we do, we each carry a trash bag and bring out our junk plus a little of the other trash including butts, we find along the way. It's not that heavy, nor is it a big effort. We have to dump ours anyway so why not a little extra. After a while you'll start seeing others take your lead and the area will really improve.
