Phoenix = Baghdad?
Can't Post

Q: What do Phoenix, AZ and Baghdad, Iraq have in common?

A: They are both now officially part of the Third World.

So, I spent my entire lunch hour today driving around trying to get some gasoline for my car. There is currently NO gas to be found at any filling station near me. I just love the Third World infrastructure we have here. One pipeline from Tucson to Phoenix springs a little leak--and a city of 3.5 million people runs out of gas. Go figure. /end rant/

The line for then nearest open gas station (which is several miles away from my house, with at least three closed stations between) went all the way down the street for at least a quarter mile each way at 5:30 this morning! I'm one of those really smart people who thought about filling up days ago, never got around to it and am now driving on fumes . . . so bright and early tomorrow morning (read: 3AM) I will be embarking on an adventure. Mission: gas.

Well its a darn good thing that Governor Napolitano has gone on TV saying that there is no problem with the gasoline supplies in Phoenix. Absent her reassurances I would be concerned.

Apparently the governor hasn't driven by the gas stations with yellow tape and orange cones around them.

Apparently if you drive to other counties (Casa Grande or Apache Junction) they have gas, as they do not burn the Maricopa county "clean air" formula.

It isn't too bad. The two opens ones I found are around $1.89 and could be a whole lot worse.

The local NPR station conducted an interview with Terry Goddard (AZ Attorney General) and he said that there was nothing illegal in AZ for the station owners to charge whatever they can get. One Awatukee station today was charging $4.95 per gallon. This sucks.

I got some at 56th St and Greenway for $1.99 at the Mobil around 7:30. They were doing a great job directing traffic and keeping it organized. Could have been more chaotic had there not been so much cooperation.

Ooh, Ooh....I get to telecommute.

Telecommute = sitting on the couch in your jammies listening to the stereo with your work open on the coffee table.

From everything I've heard, this really is a consumer driven crisis (I have some super secret Homeland Security sources). If everyone would just chill until they have 1/4 tank, cut down on unnecessary trips (like going to work) quit filling up their boats (like some idiot in the paper) and fill up at 4:50 in the morning (like I did Y-day)....everything would be hunky dory. Like a LOT of "crisis'" this is 3/4 people freaking out.

We DO, however , need an anti gouging law. That a-hole in Awatukee needs to be strung up by his thumbs.

Oh...Phoenix resembles Baghdad in more ways than just being hot with no gas....We have our own fundamentalist "Taliban" and we live in a cultural desert.

So stop your whining, you bunch of babies...did Phoenix recently undergo "coalition" bombing? I must have missed it on CNN.

Is YOUR shortage why gas here in CA has gone up again? They're charging $2.10 for the cheap 87 octane. Last weekend I paid $1.67. I freakin' hate CA gas politics.

Thank You for bringing us back to reality, this thread was missing your politically correct intellect. We are all richer for having read your post.

I don't believe the situation in Phoenix has any bearing on California gas prices. The main problem in Phoenix is a ruptured pipeline between Tucson and Phoenix that originates in El Paso Texas. California produces it's own gasoline in it's own oil refiniries.

I got lucky at lunch yesterday. Only had to wait in line about 15 minutes, but they ran out of regular unleaded as I pulled in to the pump. The premium cost $2.19 a gallon.

I may have to stick around this weekend instead of heading north to go climbing if the supply issue isn't resolved.

SUCCESS!!!! After waiting in line 45 minutes at Tatum and Bell, I finally filled my tank. (only $2.09 for premium unleaded too) Now I got gas like a bean and chili burrito gone wrong.

BTW, Ed, Going up north for the weekend shouldn't be an issue as far as gas is concerned. There is no statewide shortage (to the best of my knowledge) outside of the Maricopa County area.

Should be able to get gas outside the CBG area (Clean Burning Gasoline). The CBG area includes Maricopa County, some areas of Pinal County (Apache Junction, Gold Canyon) and some areas of Yavapai County (just north of Lake Pleasant).
As far as I can tell you should be able to get MTBE free gas at Florence Junction (36 miles east of 101 and 60), Black Canyon City (41 miles north of 17 and 10), and Casa Grande (41 miles southeast of 60 and 10).
For some, with a few gallons yet to spare, it may save time and money to go to these areas to get gas. I haven't tried this yet but sources tell me that gas is readily available in Casa Grande for as cheap as $1.59 /gallon. I may head out to Florence Junction later today...

Check the link below for information on the exotic blend of fuel that Maricopa County area uses to keep its air clean and which has caused us many problems these last few days.

http://www.weights.az.gov/...CBG_FAQ/CBG_FAQT.htm

Ed, don't let this gas "problem" keep you from heading north. Just fill up in Black Canyon City or Cordes Junction before you return to the Valley. You'll only be 40-60 miles in the hole.

Yesterday I was in Tucson and gas prices seemed high. I came home to the Globe area and filled up at the Wal Mart (local cheap gas) for $1.65 - midgrade.

What was interesting, was that each of the eight pumps had a customer - which is unusual anytime, but especially at 10 pm. One guy in a small pickup (I think he was from Phoenix) was filling two 55 drums and a couple of 5 gallon containers with gas. Made me think "urban refugee". I sure would hate to see a multi-day power outage in the Phoenix area. It would then indeed look like Bagdad.

Don't worry, folks...

As of right now, the United Nations is assembling a Humanitarian Mission for the beleagured people of Phoenix. Soon, non-stop flights supported by French paratroopers will be flying in to bring cheap gasoline and much needed relief to those of you who have suffered for, literally, hours under the brutal and repressive regime of profiteering gas station owners.
