Emotions high as flight 93 is relived
In reply to: MOST red-carpet movie premieres end with thunderous applause and a buzz of conversation. But here there was silence. And sobs. "I've never heard a quieter theatre in my life," Ivy Jacobson, a Manhattan lawyer, said after seeing United 93, the first big-screen portrayal of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Despite fears that the film would exploit the still-raw emotions from that day, most viewers said it honoured the memory of the passengers and crew. I don't know about anybody else, but I've been waiting for this one to come out since I first began seeing those heart-wrenching trailers. I'll be watching for its opening in our area.

I was wondering how long it would take to turn that event into some blatant way of making money. Of course, within weeks there were the slogans ... "buy your car from John Johnson Chevrolet, don't let the terrorists win" ... but a hollywood movie is alwlays like the ultimate low any event can sink to like Pearl Harbor or Black Hawk Down or even that anti-sematic travesty that is the Passion. congrats america, you've completely sold out.

I don't think that is the case at all here. The director of the film got permission from all of the families of the victims prior to making the film. It's intended as a tribute to the victims.

Slablizard approaches the post smelling around like a wolf...stops..listen...smells again...it might be a trap...PTC never liked him in the first place, but then after all he's just another wolf... Well It's an interesting video. I don't think we will EVER know ALL that happened there. If you refer to the white spots of lights I am not that sure, instead the smoke puffs are pretty evident. As it is the lack of debris around the pentagon, or the huge insurance on building 7 done few days before the 11th...etc. etc. But that's already in another thread.

Frankly ... it wasn't my first choice ... or a choice at all. But I have come to love this country, despite all the fanatics, crooks and the ungrateful know-nothing-rednecks who all hide under the "freedom" slogans when they can barely define the word with relevant life experiences. That piece of propaganda garbage is an insult to all those who died that day. Making a change in the way this country is run and, as far as the general population is concerned, showing more interest and standing up for issues that matter would be a good way to pay a tribute to all those who died. Not spending 8 dollars to go see movie. I guess that's my big issue with this country, we've made patriotism cheap. And when its cheap all the dumb can afford it. And patriotism in a person of less than average intelligence is basically nationalism. Whatever.

Making this movie is in such bad taste... it's too soon after it happened, and plus they're going to make a HUGE profit off of it, which just doesn't seem right. And just because they got a few family members (who were undoubtedly paid a ton of money) to endorse it doesn't mean all of the family members want it to be made.

you didn't get the point pink. the point is that people in this country don't really care - people might say they do but they really don't. spending 8 dollars to go see a movie on a tragic even that occured in our lifetime doesn't make caring or patriotic or a good american or anything other than "someone who went to see a movie." caring movie about what's really going on in this country does. does anyone remember the weeks after 9-11 happened? there was such a pretentious sense of new-found decency everywhere ... i say pretentious because it was so utterly obvious it would only last weeks. and it did. I'm not saying boycot this movie, but don't make it out to be anything else than it is, a way for someone to make money while beating in that old mantra ...

There was a pretty good turnout at church too. That didn't last either. Of course, it did 'stick' with some.

You know boondock, sometimes your schtick of "this country sucks, including everything from our leaders and our culture to the average joe. I'm better and I'll make sure everyone knows that I think I'm better" gets pretty old. What do you get out of being a fulltime hater?

In reply to: What do you get out of being a fulltime hater? YOUR priceless responses     Call me what you want, I wouldn't have become a citizen if I didn't want to live here. Besides, does being of foreign origin somehow exclude me from being able to suggest how this country could be even better than it is? And what I said is not my schtick - I just agree with the one half this country you love to hate. So thorne, what do you get out of being a full-time retard?

In reply to: Call me what you want, I wouldn't have become a citizen if I didn't want to live here. In reply to: Frankly ... it wasn't my first choice ... or a choice at all. Sounds like it was merely the lesser of two evils.
In reply to: Besides, does being of foreign origin somehow exclude me from being able to suggest how this country could be even better than it is? I'm all for free speech. Your's just seems to always be negative. Seriously, I can't recall you ever saying this person or that person is doing an admirable job... that they're making a positive impact. It's always "THESE PEOPLE SUCK!!!
In reply to: And what I said is not my shtick - I just agree with the one half this country you love to hate. Which half is that? From what I've seen, your disdain for things American is across the board. Back to the film - see if you can find a critic who shares your sentiment. Over at Rotten Tomatoes (after 91 reviews) it has a favorable rating of 95%.

In reply to: of course you are the one who things I'm negative, since I oppose everything you stand for. which really isn't that much anyway Where I stand: I consider myself very fortunate to live in this country I support all the protections of our Constitution I've always opposed the decision to invade Iraq I'm against deficit spending I loathe corporate welfare I loathe the current state of politics in DC I dislike the polemic nature of our national discourse I think George Bush has pissed away some historically substantial clout I favor the protection of our natural resources I support our Equal Opportunity laws I fully support legal immigration and you oppose all of these views? You have much to be proud of.

Considering you have (what seems to be) a particualry jaded perspective, I'm not surprised. People see what they want to see. Of course your finding any posts to rebuke my stated views or confirm that I'm a "crazy fundamentalist hardcore christ(i)an bush-lover" is out of the question.

In reply to: David Beamer, whose son Todd Beamer was a passenger on the flight (and became famous for uttering the words "Let's roll" as the passengers prepared to make their final stand), understands that reluctance. "Look, it's painful. It's a nice thing to put out of your mind without necessarily forgetting, because every day it hurts. But I believe this movie has two excellent objectives: One is to capture the reality of what really happened on that plane, and the second is to remind us this war is still going on. To the extent that it helps us to remain vigilant, that's good." EXACTLY!
