Hey All, Last weekend I got a ticket at the Gunks for "camping within 150' of the trail". I was wondering if anyone else has gotten this ticket and happens to know how much they charge for this violation. Thanks!

Where were you camping? I remember when my partner got a ticket for parking at the overlook. I don't blame them at all. dev

In the multi-use area, which apparently is illegal to camp in these days. I really am not upset about getting the ticket- just the way that they treated me when they gave me the ticket. Plus, the ranger decided to only give me and not my partner a ticket, which I found odd. We are both clearly adults- certainly not crazy college students or people who were partying. We just got in late, set up a tent, and woke up early to have a full day of climbing. The ranger was obnoxious and made me wait for about an hour to get this ticket.

I camp at MUA all the time and have never had a problem or known anyone to get a ticket. However, I've always camped at a legit site.

The only camping allowed on Preserve land is Camp Slime, near the steel bridge.

It seems to me that they just closed a few of the campsites (the ones at the bottom of the hill) on the side that opposes the main parking lot.

Just to elaborate on my last post- there are two camp sites available. Camp Slime and the multi-use area. In the last 10 years (as long as I have been camping in the MUI) they have been continuing to cut back on the camp sites available at the MUI. And it seems like I was in an area that is no longer legal there.

Yeah, the will close campsites if they get trashed. So you weren't under one of those "camp here" placards?

You have to climb all the way up the hill in the dark nowadays and cross your fingers to find an open site. The bottom sites have been closed since sometime last season, I think.

However, all closed sites that I saw were very clearly marked with signs stating the closure. I stayed across the street from the hill and was way back away from the road. no closures over there, but we did see people camping at the sites near the road that were very clearly marked. I was surprised people would actually do that, but I guess it happens.

Had the same exact experience couple of weeks ago. Got a ticket for not camping in a designated area, had to wait for about half an hour. The ranger acted like he was doing me a favor by not giving one to my partner. When I asked where the legal campsites are, he pretty much told me to go read the board and look for them myself. To answer your question -- the ticket is $125, which I think is a little steep. It needs to be paid within about 10 days (no personal checks accepted) otherwise your license gets suspended. Welcome to the Gunks.

Thanks for the reply, though that is definitely more money than I expected it to be. (I guessed $100 tops.) I guess it is almost nice that they only give one person the ticket- just seemed very odd to me. And I definitly saw him giving other females tickets and no males... Oh well.
