hi i was just curious what everyone's ape index is here... ape index is just arm span in inches minus height in inches. just give me a number, i don't really want doctoral discertations here! i would like to try and get a feel for what a "good" ape index is... oh yeah mine is +.25 edit to fix definition... i calculated it correctly, just put the wrong thing down.

Ape index...I love it, are you talking thumb to thumb? Thats ~4 inches for me. I have problems with my knuckles dragging sometimes, should I wear gloves for that?

xanx, I will not provide a doctoral dissertation, however your definition is WRONG. It is arm span minus height (in inches) not the other way around. That is why a positive ape index means you have relatively long arms. (mine is plus 3") Curt (edited because I re-measured tonight, for the sake of accuracy)

Mines about +0.5. Reaching for stuff isn't the problem, figuring out what to do with everything below that first knuckle is the problem!

I'm not really looking for a doctoral dissertation either, but a quick question/observation: How does your Ape Index work anyways -- wouldn't a short person with a really positive Ape Index still have problems with reachy holds? So, at 5"6, I'm a +2 (68" reach). A climber who's 5"4 with a +4 ape index, or a 5"8 climber with a 0 ape index have the same reach -- so don't you have to consider someone's height and not just ape index? (my sincere apologies to the original poster who probably only wanted ##'s and not silly questions like the one I just posted -- it's just that my curiousity couldn't contain itself)

I guess I'm not an ape at all. More like a little monkey. +2 at 5'9" Measured a buddy who is 6'7" with an unreal +7! He has never climbed. Dang, in a gym he could darn near reach up and grab the ceiling!

+ 4-1/2" it makes up for my extremely short legs (27" inseam on a 5'-9" body). actually it's not too bad as i can reach like a taller guy and get bunched up like a shorter one. now if i was just more limber.
