if its cold outside and the rock freezes your fingers boil up some water and put it in a nalgene. It will stay hot for an hour or two then it stays warm for 2-3 hours. If you bring some tea you can enjoy it with that too. for the boulders bringing a stick brush to the projects works well for the top holds cause friction is nice when your on nothing. clmerma

I agree about the camel back, I also bring some trail mix in a nalgene bottle clipped to the harness.

If you bring some tea you can enjoy it with that too. If its cold, put a toewarmer in your chalk bag. They come in packages of two: One for you, one for your partner. Get a chalk bag with a zipper pouch. Keep a Zipka in it for getting caught out after dark.

When it's hot out I freeze my water in my nalgene bottles and it makes a nice cold drink for most of the day. I'm an old school boulderer (and trad climber) with bad disk in my low back so coming off boulder problems is out of the question. I don't have a boulder pad, but many years ago I started to carry a cloth place mat (for dinner tables) and use it to clean my shoes of pebbles and grit at the base of problems. It's light enough that I use it at the start of multi pitch climbs as well.

In reply to: Keep a Zipka in it for getting caught out after dark. I agree, although I like the Black Diamond Ion. I'd have to say that I've found two Tiblocs to be indespensible on a couple of occasions. Jugging up to get a stuck rap rope would take about 3 times as long with prussiks.

Have you ever frozen your water bottles, expecting a HOT HOT day- then the clouds are out and it's not so hot? I usually use 1qt gatorade bottles... It's no fun tryin' to suck on blocks of ice, wishing they would melt, all the while being teased with just a couple of oz of water per hour!! I made that mistake ONCE. TIP: Take at least one NOT frozen! LOL

wraping your jacket up over the nalgene while you climb gets it mighty toasty like wise with your shoes.

In reply to: When it's hot out I freeze my water in my nalgene bottles and it makes a nice cold drink for most of the day. Does that actually work? I've been too afraid to try it. I know Nalgenes are indestructable because they are tempered on the outside, but I wasn't sure if they were tempered on the inside too allowing them to withstand the expansion of freezing water.

Eventually, your Nalgene bottles will crack. Use Gatorade bottles instead. They come full of Gatorade. The bottles are practically indestructable. When you lose one or it breaks, it's no big deal. Pop the plastic ring off the top of the bottle. If you leave it on, the bottle will leak.

Fill nalgene bottle half full with water. Freeze half-full bottle, leave cap open. Fill bottle up with cold tap water. And you're set. - d.

Cem warmers for the chalk bag when it's super cold. But my thing is a half gallon Gatorade bottle slung with webbing to go over the shoulder. More liquid that a Nalgene bottle, and they last for years. I also make "cheap-o-rade"... Kool-Aid half strength, with a dash of salt. On hot months, I freeze it solid the night before, so I have cold stuff to drink all day.

The half-and-half nalgene is the way to go. Just add a little lemon and you can sit down at a 4 star restaurant. I'm gonna have to try the zipka idea, i just got a warning from the park rangers last saturday for getting out too late: we couldn't see a thing! For food on the mulitipitch, nothing beats the new Quaker Oatmeal Squares. I just found them a while back, and they are great because for a slightly smaller than a regular granola sized bar, you get 43 grams of carbs and it tastes a lot like an oatmeal cookie! comes in 3 flavors (apple, cinnamon, oatmeal raison) and they're indestructible because you cant squish 'em. i just made myself hungry... time to go eat now!!!

In reply to: I also make "cheap-o-rade"... Kool-Aid half strength, with a dash of salt. Ugh! How can you stand that man? Dilluted water with salt? If I'm flavoring something it is going to be at least 1 and 1/2 times as much flavor than it should be.

Don't knock it till you try it... It tastes exactly like Gatorade. Too much sugar is not easily metabolized.

You leave the tops off when you freeze them. This should protect them from breaking well enough.

Adding salt to your drink is something NO good trainer would recommend, not in the last 30 years anyway.

In reply to: Eventually, your Nalgene bottles will crack unlikely..... never had one of mine break on me and i treat them pretty badly.... dropped one like 10ft on to rocks once (unintentionally of course) nothing happened..... and if some thing does (and it doesn't matter what); Nalgene will replace it for free and usually will throw in an extra one or two for the inconvenience.

Just to follow up on this: I ran over mine with a 3/4 ton pickup just to see what would happen, and while it did put an irreperable dent in it, it did not crack. They are reasonably indestructable.

In reply to: In reply to: Adding salt to your drink is something NO good trainer would recommend, not in the last 30 years anyway. The difference between Gatorade and Powerade is the amount of salt, both have salt, as it is an electrolite that needs to be replaced. You need to educate yourself a bit brutha.  Where's Jay (jt512) when you need him ??? He's a nutrition scientist. Adam is right. Sodium promotes hydration by increasing the rate at which water is absorbed from the intestine and promoting water retention. He's right about excess carbohydrate, too. Carbohydrate in sports drinks should be less than 8% (wt/vol) to avoid reducing the rate of gastric emptying. -Jay

In reply to: In reply to: Eventually, your Nalgene bottles will crack unlikely...... Maybe it's unlikely that your Nalgene bottle will crack. Mine did. The whole bottom broke off and froze to the freezer. I didn't notice it until got to the crag. The bottom of my pack was soaked. That night, when I looked in the freezer, the bottom of my bottle was sitting right where I left it. This occurred after 20+ freezings.

rrradam - I do the Cheapo style Gatorade differently . . I buy Gatorade Fierce flavors and dilute them almost 50/50 with water! I have a 100 oz camelbak and put a 64 oz Gatorade in then fill it with water! Yummy! Second indispensible item (mind you I am promarily a sport climber/boulderer) my stick clip - not just any stickclip - I made the stickclip from a professional grade extendable paintroller pole . . . so the top is a threaded "bolt" made for attaching paintrollers . . . I then bought a cheapo paintroller cut off the handle and added a $.99 toiletbrush again cutting the handle to size, crazy glued the toilet brush into the paintroller handle and backed it up with a good tape job. Now I have both a stick clip and an extendable brush for high boulder problems! The toilet brush is about the best brush I have found for brushing holds, it is soft enough that it doesn't damage the rock and the shape necessarily makes it capable of fitting into nearly any type of hold!
