I'm game .. count me in .. who's bringing the bop-its and slacklines?! Also, something to note, if we're camping in the refuge, there will be no beer. No worries on my part, just dont want to see any good red bull and rum go to waste ... PS: Anyone driving up from South/Central Tejas is more than welcome to hitch a ride with me from Dallas ... Thanks for the heads up on this post, Matt. Count on one more gumby to slow everyone down Any ideas as to where we will climb: Narrows I assume if the group is large, maybe Crab Eyes and Half Dome if the groups a bit smaller? Just wondering.

i was thinking the Narrows, as it has a number of climbs, maybe upper or lower Mt. Scott, and some bouldering.

was up at oklahoma this weekend .. turns out that they have some pretty nice camping at ft sill for $3/tent .. as opposed to $5/tent at the lake which really isnt all that nice at all .. they also have some small cabins that military can get for $35/night and the rest of us pay $45/night. it's right on the water and has all kinds of paddle boats and stuff to rent .. not to mention a free swimming area .. yay! they said that, at late aug, we'd probably have run of the place, and i didnt think to ask about alcohol, but dont try to sneak "stuff" in, as they do search your vehicle upon arrival, since it is on the property of a base and all ... if anyone's interested, i can call and get more info .. I hate you all...RC.com getting tgether in my old playground, and I've got biz to attend to... For two years I divided every weekend between the Ta's (ghetto for the Wichita Mts Wildlife Refuge and Quartz. Here's what I can tell you...unless things have changed drastically in the past month, you won't be searched if you decide to stay at Ft Sill, and it's not illegal to bring alcohol on the fort to begin with, so you can getcha' drink on anyway you like. I always found the Narrows a bit crowded for my likings, but since going to E Rock, "crowded" has taken on a whole new boundary. Lower Scott has a few great sporties and one gem of a trad climb (Teacup Arete 10b ohmygooodness sweet splitter-to-offwidth). Upper Scott is fun for the easy to moderates, but it can get kinda crowded too. And Crab Eyes, if you can manage the hike in the heat, is well worth it for the incredible cracks (don't forget Lost dome too!). Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir...I just get so excited at the thought that others are enjoying my old stompin grounds! anyway, if you want some beta, gimme a holler. Have fun and we should plan on doing it again this fall (when I get back when it cools off and the friction is sooo nice...

I'll definitely check on the alcohol thing, but I'm guessing that they probably will allow it. As for the search, maybe it was just because of the holiday weekend (we were up there the weekend of the fourth) ... just thought I'd throw it out for everyone *just in case* though. Sauron, if you can make your way to Dallas, we can carpool the rest of the way up. We can play bop-it all the way up .. yay! Indie .. Thanks for the beta. Also, Bop-it is a game, similar to the simon game of old (with the four panels that light up) .. very addictive, highly recommended.

The on-base camping area is called LETRA (Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area) and is where I have camped the last 5 times, I wondered when someone else would discover it. There are no private campsites, you just set up anywhere you can find a spot. Some areas have picnic tables and grills, a few have some big cottonwoods for shade. There are bathrooms and showers with occasional hot water. The lake is clear and cold, even in August,,,not many places you can say that about in Oklahoma. It costs like eight dollars a car to get in to swim for the day, but only $3.00 to get in to camp for the night and you get to swim for free (figure that one , but don't point that out to them). I have never asked about the alchohol thing, I just quietly drank my beer and no one said anything Anyway, just thought that I would add some more information to the mix. Anyone up for a night dive? Clearest water in Oklahoma, just not much to see, don't forget the wetsuit

Yeah, the LETRA thing is a pretty good deal...I remember going there to go for a swim just to cool off and seeing the prices...typical Army operation, if ya ask me (apologies to the grunts out there). It did look pretty nice though and the price is hard to beat. You can also get backcountry permits if you want to camp in the wild, but there are really only a few decent water sources, and they're probably all really shallow, muddy, and warm by now. I've got some beta on some "secret" bouldering in the Ta's, if you want a change of pace. PM me if ya want the 411. Have any of you all climbed at Quartz yet?

I don't know guys.... I'm a regular down at the wichitas and access to LETRA has always been an on and off thing (especially since 9/11). It all depends on the alert status of the army. Also, the gates (I think they're called apache and bravo) that you use to access LETRA are not manned or open all the time so you could have problems with people not being able to get in who are coming in late or wanting to leave early. The place that we like to go is on the east side of Lake Lawtonka. We've never been hasseled and its usually cooler since you get the southwest breeze blowing across the water. Access here is never a problem and most of the time you don't pay unless you stay in the campsite past 10:00. It would be a great place for a gathering.
