when I first started...

i picked up a harness, shoes, an 8, a pear-a-biner,
and a chalk bag for about $90.

then a 50 meter dry sterling rope for $90

another pair of shoes for $70

8 wiregate draws, a MadRock paradox (like ATC XP),
the MadRock rope bag, and 4 locking d's for another $110

and 2 tricams for $20 and a full set of Metalius
curved hexes for $50.

I felt pretty well started off for a total of....$430

but that included a rope and 2 pairs of shoes
I ended up selling one pair so -$30...

so what, $400? that sounds about rite.
I only wish I searched a bit more for some good
package deals on websites first though.

2. Taking advice from strangers on the internet.

This is the best piece of advice I've read to date on RC.com There are soooo many n00bie idiots that like to make themselves feel important by posting that there is a ton of misinformation out there. Unfortunately there is no way to curtail that.

I had a n00b ask me to take him climbing recently. It ranked up there as one of the most frustrating days of my life. The guy wouldn't shut up and kept contradicting my methods because he had read differing opinions on RC.com. The dude couldn't even tie a clove hitch not to mention the other knots!!!!. This same idiot posts like crazy on this website about stuff he knows nothing about!

Be careful out there kiddos,

I like you. You sound smart, funny, and like you're willing to put in the time and sweat it takes, and have fun doing it.

You ever want a partner at Rumney (I know, it's a long drive from Ontario) just drop me a PM.

Cheers!

Thanks for the kind welcome...it sucks getting your firsts couple posts out of the way on a new forum but you guys have offered some really good advice and I've already had someone offer to help me out at a local gym!

And yeah, photography...I can't wait to combine that with climbing once I get the basics down over the next couple years. I see that there are some really good photographers at this site...My photo website is at www.mikeschneider.com if you care to take a look.

Any more public or PM advice is always appreciated...

I still lack draws and a rope.......... bringing another rope and more draws would be overkill cause there's already more then enough out there.

But wait, the question was aimed towards outdoor climbing.

You mean that there are ropes and draws left outside in the rain, snow, and sun for everyone to use???!!!!! :tinfoilhat: That's awesome!!! I wish I knew that years ago before I bought all my shiny new gear.

And I am sure that you have a real clue as to what you really need. Get your manky ass back to your gym. AND STAY THERE.

Please adhere to the advice given not to trust anyone here... , oh and don't piss off curt or jt512.

Happy climbing! :D

hey i was recently in the same position you are. so far I've dropped about 600 bucks, but racking up on trad gear as we speak. I live in northern ontario and NO ONE climbs out here so finding gear is very hard. I found a small shop down south and bring all my business there. as you get familliar with the shop owner he'll cut you deals and probably give you pointers (or invite you to clean his route lol)

i spent 80 on shoes, 100 on rope, 80 on started kit 80 on draws.

P.S. if ur ever heading up north and looking for a climb, PM me.

Have to agree ... very nice eye. Your layout works, very smooth. I'll be looking forward to seeing some shots on climbing.

Ah, I love arguing with complete and total jack asses. For one, what I mean by my statement that bringing another rope out wouldn't be necessary is that every weekend there's always ropes left sitting in bags, there's not enough people climbing or we already have enough top ropes set up, or it's too crowded, whatever, so atleast someone always winds up bringing their rope for nothing. Same goes for draws, everyone carries far more then they need, so there's always been more then enough to go around.

Two, yes I am still a noob, I have only been climbing 7 months, which means I just got started, and in the 7 months of "getting started" I haven't spent 500 bucks, my point is not that I know everything it is that I'll need in my climbing career, it's that you can get started for under 500. Read the original question, it asks how much you can expect to get started, not how much and what you'll need over a decade of climbing. I never once said that I know it all or that I'm even near having all the gear that I need.

Go back to grade school and learn how to read, and while your at it, get your parents to teach you how to treat others with respect, until then I'll show you the kindness that you've shown me in welcoming me into the climbing community.

No, but I have gotten started, or are you trying to tell me that all those memories are fake and that I've really just been in a coma the past 7 months?

Okay, I get it...Climbing gear will likely cost around $500 for me to have a decent set-up to get outside this summer without mooching too much. It's likely not necessary to buy everything all at once to get started, thus accounting for those that have done some climbing while having spent less.

Either way, I've got a good idea of the range...

I tried this once before, to no avail. But what the hey, let's go round the horn again.

In reply to:
1) I have found a potential partner to get into this sport with me and was wondering what the approximate cost of good start-up equipment is if we want to do a lot of sport climbing this summer. Rope, shoes, harness, helmet (?), etc...what else?

Your 7 months of mooching notwithstanding, he asked for a sport climbing starter kit. By definition a sport climbing starter kit MUST INCLUDE a rope and some draws. I answered his question as directly as I could... 500 bucks, cheaper if you shop around.

Its really that simple.

Cheers!

Don't mess with The Milktoast. He's a jovial fellow, but don't let that fool you. He's a powerful Netizen who'll flame your shorts off without breaking a sweat. Without even trying. Without it even looking like a flame.

Don't mess with The Milktoast (especially when he doesn't take his meds!)

That's pretty selfish of you, to not own nor bring gear just because there's already "enough" there. You've been flailing and falling on people's gear for seven months and think it's ok that you don't own any gear... well that's a great attitude. Another few months and you'll be known as the mooch who's too cheap to bring their own gear. See how many rides you get after that.

Buy a rope and draws and tell your friends to leave theirs home once in a while.
