The soft variety is a polycarbonate with the recyclable designation number 5; it's pretty strong stuff, recyclable, but has a lower melting point and probably isn't advised for boiling water. The hard variety is a type of lexan with the number 7 designation; it is not recyclabe but is ridiculously durable and can hold hot liquids with no risk of deformation. i got this information on pretty good authority as it's straight from the guy who invented the tritan plastic. If your source is as represented, I'd say that the guy who invented Tritan needs to go back to college chemistry before he constitutes a "pretty good authority." #5 plastic is polypropylene which is not derived in any way from BPA-containing sources. Further, if you flip over a "soft" Nalgene brand bottle, I think you'll find a #2 on the bottom. #2 indicates that the plastic is high density polyethylene ("HDPE"). I believe that Nalgene also manufactures low density polyethylene bottles, as well-- which happen to be stamped with a #4. Neither HDPE nro LDPE are derived in any way from BPA-containing sources. I find the LDPE bottles to be a bit on the soft side for my needs, but I've been using the HDPE bottles for years without any problem. So my water bottle has a #5 stamped on the bottom...sounds like its ok to drink then.

What do we know other than "the media" is spewing a vague death sentence to the public? The NYT is a piece of shit anyway and if it ever stated all the facts, I'd probably die of a heart attack (long before the ingestion of toxins from my Nalgene). I'll lay the money out that drinking 12 oz of soda is more detrimental to your health than taking in the same amount of water from a Nalgene. People need to get their facts/shit/life together. The do gooders, PC crowd - WTF are you thinking? Recently was at a retail store and the counter person was doing their duty of drinking bottled water - because it's healthy...right next to their pack of Camel's (same scenario played out multiple times...). Fcuking retard with a capital R. The band wagon is circling the block, who wants a free ride? If you are going to walk the line. Be prepared to walk to the finish and not a convenient resting place. I dont know all that's going on with this situation but I do believe in innocent till proven guilty. I love my Nalgenes (all seven of them) and will stand behind them until facts are presented that they are truly evil weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully it wont be concluded that you had to consume 45 gallons of water a day for 37 years to get sick (as in most of my other experiences in similar situations). Till then, I'll just wait quietly to pass away from being forced to tolerate second hand smoke.

Are you all insane, because being this attached to a water bottle can only be some sort of mild mental illness. Jay

So if I have nalgene bottles with the number 7 and PC on the bottom should I get rid of it?

i dont really care. i'm still gonna use mine. also, not entirely sure how this BPA or whatever gets into the drink i am drinking. i mean there are so many things around that will give you cancer, i hardly feel that drinking from a nalgene every weekend will cause me to drop dead.
