scrapes = scars and scars are cool. However, they can hurt. I took a fall on my leg, resulting in a nice scrape the size of a quarter, I then proceeded to do the exact same thing to the exact same spot. At that point I swore loudly and my scrape was a blood, muddy, stinging mess of pain and blood. Anyway, the pain eventually went away, and I was left with a neat scar as a reward. To recap, scars are cool.

Knee pads, elbow pads, long pants, hand jammies, and tape. Full body armor is my solution. In one offwidth I even ace-bandaged my head for the mandatory occipital-mandible bridge.

My first day of outdoor climbing, I was the only person producing any amount of blood at all. I got up to a pretty crazy overhang and decided to take a rest, and when I looked down at my knee there was a surprising amount of blood running down my shin. The increased blood pressure and pulse rate makes for some really wicked-looking injuries that are really nothing more than glorified paper cuts, and most of them go away within a few days. Even the larger dings on the back of my legs (an experiment in heel-hooking gone horribly, horribly wrong) were gone in a week.

If you want to make scrapes heal faster and not scar, you'll probably want to apply some sort of topical ointment right after the injury. I don't know much about that, since I call scrapes and scars "character marks" which raise the resale value enormously. ;)

I thought helmets were for head jamming wide cracks and it's really motivating to keep moving when the chinstrap starts to dig in.

Sharing a little blood with the rock is kind of a bonding process and etherial joining of forces - the climb can be your best friend or worst enemy but their still is a connection if you dont bleed you havent climbed hard enough.

Of course there is the full body armor concept

It's part of the game. Go climb in JTree for a while. JTree always rips the shit out of me.

When I first started climbing my knees seemed to always get in the way. It would look like I took a cheese grater to them sometimes. I originally thought it was due to the fact that I am somewhat tall. (Over 6 feet.) However, I found the more I climbed and the more I focused on technique and foot placement the less I would scrape my knees. It also helped to relax a bit and slow down.

I am very proud every time I draw blood. That way I'm for sure I did something. This last weekend I slipped down the rock and bled from a cut the whole length of my shin, as I watched it turned purple and bled, it was friggin' awesome. When I went back to climb what I fell off of (of course I had to redo it), there was a huge ball of hair that had been scraped off my leg. Didn't make a difference though, I still have hairy legs. The cuts might be avoided though, they mostly happen when a fothold breaksout from under me, or whn I see something that looks fun to climb, but there is no good way to get back down. I hate when I realize that halfway up. Also chicks with scrapes on their knees is sexy, and I mean really, realy sexy. I shouldn't have thought about it, I'm at work and now I'm all worked up. Damn!
